Pulled couple of them with 8ft tandem disc and harrow behind. The four bladed one and and a six blade the six was a bunch smoother but they b0oth did q great job. Made a good seedbed for oats.

Yep, it's a stalk chopper. I have a horse drawn one just like that one in the fence row. I also have a small one that was pulled with a tractor and runs on skids.

I recognized it as a stalk chopper, but never seen such a thing set up for horses. I wonder if it was a tobacco thing more in the tobaco reagion than up here in corn country, it looks a little light for corn stalks?

Riding would depend on ground conditions. If good loose soil the knives would cut in and not bounce when the next knife hit the soil. Hard ground it would bounce when each knife hit the ground. I think later ones had the knives on a spirle so a part of the knife was always on the ground. Pulling a disk behind would help that. I don't think the knives would cut the stalks unless they cut into the ground as just rolling over top on hard ground I don't think they would cut the stalk.

Remember at that time the corn stalks were not as tough as now and it was one stalk every foot not 3 as it is now.

Note the hoops on top of the frame of the tractor-drawn chopper(s). For transport, you unhitched, flipped the machine over, and pulled it on those 'skids'.
