While I?m On The Subject Of Pole Barns...

What are your thoughts on open ended pole barns? Both short sides open, long sides closed.

The idea is max width across the short side on both ends for drive through. Perhaps gates would be used to close off the ends.

What are the hazards/benefits of an open ended pole barn? Anyone have one, how are they holding up over time and through wind and snow storms?

Thanks!
Bill

Depending on how the building is oriented, and the prevailing direction of the wind, the open-ended building could easily fill up with snow.

I plan on building one as an extension to my machine shed. The plus is the drive through aspect, the negative is the snow/rain blowing in. I plan to either use a heavy tarp on the open sides or rig a sliding door system. At any rate, it's better than leaving equipment out in the field which is my only choice now.

I put doors on either end of my 30'x60' pole building. I can drive straight through, or not. Depending on how much stuff is in the way.

Nothing wrong with open ended pole barns as long as they're braced good and the trusses are secured properly to prevent strong winds from lifting the roof off.
I have a couple of open ended barns.
Only down side I've seen is weather blowing through the barn.
Barns with one end open are the ones that are subject to wind damage.
Strong winds blowing into the open end are blocked by the closed end creating a parachute effect, if the winds are strong enough it will blow the end out, lift the roof off or blow the barn down.
Most of the buildings we have that are only open on one end or side are tool sheds or round bale hay barns.
We'll normally try to build them in low areas out of the wind or turn the open end away from the normal direction most storms come from.

Have one open on one end, south end to be exact. Semi sheltered, maybe 80 feet to woods.

While the majority of the rain and snow are kept out, it's not perfect. 10 foot high doorways, snow will blow in a few feet.

If it was open on both ends, you'd have a covered snow drift here.
