Panel Adhesive...........

Has anyone used the 3M two part panel adhesive? Customer reviews are almost all 5 star.

I just ordered some, and I need to try it to put a patch over an area that was rusted on a minivan. There's insulation under the panel, and I'm afraid I'd set the thing on fire if I welded.

BTW, I've always had an unbreakable rule in my shop. I NEVER weld on a vehicle within an hour of closing up shop and leaving the building. And then check to make sure everything is cooled off.

I like your shop rule! In the last years I worked at the paper mill any time we did any cutting or welding there had to be a fire watch present, and stay after for 1 hour. Then the hot work permit had to be turned in to security and the roving guard would check the area for the next 8 hours. The place eventual burned, but not from maintenance, it was from an overheated air compressor.

Our shop is built with a large concrete pad outside the door and cutting and welding is for most part done outside but like you if any GRINDING, Cutting or welding has been done we make sure someone is around for an hour or more. We use a lot of 3m snot glue for rubber around windows but cannot help you with the two part. Most 3M products are as advertised.

I always clean up, sweep up, put tools away after welding and grinding in my shop. This takes 20 minutes or so. Then I walk to the house and get something cold to drink and walk back to the shop, sit down in my shop chair, and drink it. Spending the extra 45 minutes for this ritual leaves the shop clean and me refreshed.

I always have a "fire watch" after any kind of welding, cutting or grinding. I have set the trash can on fire once. It was plastic and filled with used paper towels. Saw the smoke before the flames, that was enough for me. Changed to a metal can and it was way smaller... Always move any thing combustible far, far away from the welding area.

Are you talking about 3m 8115? I use it almost daily at the body shop. It does stick well but can shadow if used like your saying. It will expand and contract differently than the filler you use over it. If you don’t care about that go for it! You must grind the paint off completely on your van and your repair panel, and apply it to both the panel and the van. Test fit it first and make shure it fits tightly all around before you glue. Be ready to have a way to hold it on once you stick it,you don’t want to pull it back off or fall off. DON’T rivet it on!

It's the 3M 08115 200ml.

I plan on fitting the patch and holding it with sheet metal screws just like I was going to weld it. Then put the adhesive in, screw the patch down, and remove the screws when the adhesive has cured.

Actually, I can weld part of it, it's just one end I'm afraid of, where there is insulation by a substructure.

Thanks for the responses.
