Hay baler and Allis update and few questions

With Mrs. jocco resting We took the baler out and baled a few broken ones to try it out. After all the hours of hard work and cuss words it did tie (I did a lot of work to the knotters etc). To say I had quite a time with the knife and disks would bean understatement. This was a international Mccormick 46 It had sat for a few years. I would also like to ad the Allis CA we redid ran and worked very well today too. Now for the question (my mail is open). If any one has a 46 for parts, I would be interested in the the knotters and the plunger cover (yes that is hard to get). I do look at ebay and yes bought a few parts there too, Thanks to all

I would get a new holland baler and park that old 46. I worked baling with a guy had one of those. It took 3 guys to load a load of hey one to drive one to tie the twine and one to load. If it was the least bit tough it wouldn't tie. What a piece of junk it was.

This is a backup and for small fields I do have newer bailers. Around me the 46 did quite well the 45 was the problem child much like you!!

Old guy I knew put a seat back by the knotters on his IH 45 for his wife to sit on and tie the knots that the baler missed. She'd wave, he'd stop, she'd tie the knot(s) and wave again for him to start. Then he sold his timber for a couple million bucks, and bought a new baler. Salesman asked if he wanted them to put on a seat for Muriel, he said he thought she was going to kill him.

I had a 46 and no problems with tying. It had the plunger with the slided changed before we got it. I DO KNOW the slides on a New Holland will make them mis if worn as that is what we had before the IH but it did not have the thrower we needed. But even with that thrower we had no tying problems. Baler left in 1980 when cows did. I don't remember what the slided on plunger slid on but I would guess that any now that part would be worn enough to make the tying problems. The slides on the plunger are welded on and ours the entire plunger was replaces so did not have to try to fit and weld the new slides in place. New Holland had wood slides that bolted in and also adjustable rails for the slides to run in.

Never any problems with ours. But we did not try for long bales, had ours set for about 28" if I remember correctly. If you trird for 36"+ then the bale would not eject without being cought in thrower rolls by being too long. Been too long to remember but I think it was doing that when we bought it due to over length that we changed inideatly. We had the NH set for 30" before as all we wanted to do to handle them, I can see it being a problem with lokger bales.
