Metric Bolts vs. USA Standard Bolts

I slightly buggered up the threads of a Metric 8.8 M12 front wheel bolt trying to re-install front wheel on my Massey. Found out that a fine-thread USA 1/2 inch Grade 8 bolt would thread in. It was a loose fit, and I didn't trust it, but it is in there, tight, I guess. Will that be OK? I cannot seem to find Metric Grade 8.8 M12 taper-cone wheel bolts. Every place I seem to find that advertises them, in the fine print it says 1/2-Inch UNF, which isn't metric.

If you have a local tire place that does tractor and equipment tires they should have them, I know NAPA can get them where I live because that size metric bolt is fairly common to many different implements and tractors.

Dorman Products shows a number of metric lug bolts on line, there should be something there that will fit. NAPA or any parts store handling Dorman Products should be able to get them.

Yes, that will be ok. But it is not doing anything. It is just in there for looks. Keep the other five tight and you will be ok. Myself, I just cannot rest if my equip. is not perfect. I am a perfectionist and ok is not good enough for me.

Tire stores should be a first choice. NAPA, Value Auto and the like are also good sources. Metric is now common. Jim

An M12 threaded hole has a minor diameter of only about 10mm. If you could loosely turn a 1/2" bolt (which is 12.7mm diameter) into the hole I'm guessing you actually have M14 lug bolts which is a common size.

Here's a list of what's available through your local DEERE dealer, if you don't have any luck finding them elsewhere.
If the LVU23280 will work, only $1.96! If you order and can wait a couple of days so they can get them on a stock order there shouldn't be a freight charge.
BTW, they are showing the thread diameter as 0.472", sure close to the 1/2" you mention.

I suggest you call Agri-Supply. I had a similar problem, might be identical problem, on a Massey and they had the wheel bolt.

I just bought some metric bolts, m12x1.75. There is a m12x1.5 also. Fastenal has pretty much everything.

No, it will not be OK, don't tighten it or you will ruin the threads in the hub. You should be able to buy metric bolts at any good farm supply or hardware store, or auto parts. Auto parts stores might even have the tapered head bolts.

It won?t work . What you could do is run the bolt through the hub and put a nut behind the hub that would work good

(quoted from post at 00:20:24 04/08/19) A half inch national coarse might be just big enough if you re thread the hole to grab .
That would be a terrible idea. A 1/2" bolt is only .028" bigger than 12mm.

(quoted from post at 03:42:38 04/08/19) I just did the math too, and I agree with the .028 bigger, so if the 1/2 is in there the threads must be shot already?
Agreed. Time for a serious repair solution. I have helicoils, but timeserts are better.
