My grandpa would seed oats into last snow of the year and probably get almost as good of a stand as today?s drills

From the looks of those cracks I would say that tou need rain. I can not guess where that field is located.

We had 5 feet of snow over the winter the ground just cracks like that around here in the spring

The same thing that happens when you get a hard frost the end of May or June when the alfalfa just has sprouted but If you wait until it?s dry enough to drill in the spring there usually isn?t enough moisture to keep the plant growing the same reason we plant fall wheat because in the spring the fall planted crop is two months ahead of a spring planted crop

Dormant or frost seeding is an excellent way to do things but the weather has to cooperate a little bit but in exceptionally dry areas with no irrigation t?s no more of a gamble to do it this way than it is to spring seed a crop and pray for rain
