International 424

Hi im new to this forum just needing a few tips I recently bought a tractor for a really good deal its a international 424 with the gas C-146 engine. The engine has a deep knock so i know i need to tear into the engine the knock sounded higher in the engine like in the cylinder not the lower area so im assuming it could be a broke piston. The overhaul kit for that engine isvery expensive for some reason must be made of silver. That engine has no sleeves just a block. Does anyone know where I can get a good deal on a new rebuild kit?

Mite as well find out what's actually wrong before ASSUMING you need everything.

Parts can be replaced as needed, a "kit" isn't always necessary.

I'd be more worried about if the block and crankshaft are salvageable, and if any rods are beyond "reconditioning".

If any issues with any of those items, a "kit" will look CHEAP by comparison!

Before the knock, did it run poorly, have a lot of blowby, smoke excessively, etc., etc.?

My email is open.

If that knock is high and more towards the front of the engine there is really nothing
wrong with the engine , contact me and I can save you a lot of grief and money

Well I know its not a good knock its a deep sound. It kinda smoked when it first started but I thought maybe it being 52 years old valve seals could be bad. But as soon as it started knocking I parked it quick

I would first remove the oil pan and inspect things. Take a bar and see how much play there is in the rod and main bearings. If it's just one rod bearing that's the problem, I
have polished a rod journal and installed a new bearing without tearing down the engine. That was many years ago and the engine is still running.

Well I removed the oil pan 1 rod bearing was spun so I'm gonna pull the crank and and thst 1 rod replace the rod and try to see if I can take it in to get the crank turned. Now i was trying to see if I'm able to put the piston back in without having to take the head off am I able to shove it back in from the crank side without breaking a ring?
