1942 Farmall M High/Low Range Option?

I have a 1942 Farmall M with High/Low Range. I have talked to many tractor guys and old farmers and nobody is familiar with this setup. It is a pinion gear that slides on upper transmission shaft controlled by an external lever. It changes the drive ratios on all gears including reverse, hydraulic belly pump, PTO, and belt pulley. Just curious if this is factory option or aftermarket.

Aftermarket, M&W Gear, Heisler, and I think Behlen had the nine speed setup for both the H and M Farmalls. IH never had it far as I know. Neighbor sells the kits at times from tractors he parts out.

We had the Behlin on the 36 B JD. and we had one on the F-20 but not sure of brand. But on each one it just added one road speed. Nothing else changed speeds. You put the tractor
trans. in neutral and pulled a lever to put the road gear in.

I have a M and a MD with the 9 speed. One is cable operated, one has a lever. I like this option very much. Nice for raking hay. I like them enough to be looking around for one to fit the H I am bringing back to life. Al

Never saw one with range controlled on the upper shaft. Picture of a heisler setup with range shifting on the counter shaft. M&W range shift is on the countershaft also. Only thing I remember running top shaft is a gear box bolting to the belt pulley gear box opening. Ones located there I know of didn't change all the speeds you posted.

You mean like a Sherman on an 8N ford?Never heard of a HI/Low gear setup on an M.But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If it does it would be extremely rare. Probably something made for the industrial' world

I'd love to see one of those in action. Would be mighty handy when pulling a loaded hay wagon up a 10% grade.

Dad had an M with a Heistler in it. Nice, but you still had to clutch and just about stop to change gears.

The unit with the cable is an M&W and should be on the right side. The lever unit is a Heisler and should be on the left.
