Summer of 57

Got an old photo here from the summer of 57 showing a little Case tractor hooked up to a binder cutting oats. They stopped for a photo shoot with some of the local kids.

Still shocking oats in 57? Hmm. Was the date on the picture? or how do you know it was 57? The little VA looks like it was rode hard and put away wet.

that's pretty normal, we used the john deere binder and thrashing machine every year till 1972. then dad bought a massey super 92 combine. still have the binder and machine. used it in 2000.

They had a Case combine for most of the crop but I think they bindered the oats to use as cattle feed. And yes, its 1957. One of those little guys in the picture sent it to me as his mother took the picture and he knows the details. I'll have to ask him where those wheel weights originated. They do look like gears off a big old steamer or early gas tractor.

We were using combines all the way back to the 30s but used a IH binder to put up oat hay all the way up to 1965.

We once ran an Allis Chalmers 5' combine with a VAC. It actually handled it quite well.
