Ford 9600 Backhoe???????

I have found a pretty good deal on an old Ford 9600, 1973. I was wondering if it is possible to attach a backhoe to an old tractor like that? The tractor is huge, 135 hp. Just not sure if anyone has done it or if it goes on like any standard 3 point. I have never owned a tractor so any help would be much appreciated.

I used to have a JD 4010 gasser with FEL. I also had bought a 3-pt backhoe, also JD. I believe the backhoe to have originally been part of a JD 310 backhoe/loader. Whomever converted the backhoe to 3-pt built a solid, heavy-duty frame. Was all the 4010 could do to lift the thing and keep it in the air. Would dig like blazes!

Another thread on here today is also about 3-pt backhoes. Get one that matches the tractor. Too heavy a backhoe and your tractor will struggle. Too light a backhoe and your tractor can rip the backhoe apart.

There is no reason why you couldn't, however, I think that it would not be long before you would be looking for a smaller tractor. The problem is the logistics of moving when you have dug all that you can in one position. Loader backhoes have a compact cab that enables the operator to quickly swivel the seat in order to move the tractor, and the operator can also easily reach behind to his left to raise the bucket a little so that he can push the tractor with the hoe in order to move ahead. With that 9600 your hoe seat will be considerably lower than the 9600's seat, and you will have the fuel tank in between, so you will not be able to reach any of the tractor controls without climbing down and then back up. It will get old fast.

3pt hitch backhoes are better than a shovel, but a dedicated TLB (tractor, loader, backhoe) that was designed as an integrated machine is light years better. Reason being, the backhoe is solidly mounted to the tractor's frame, where on a 3pt there will be some slop and flop no matter how hard you try to avoid it. They also tend to be much more heavily and solidly built overall.

Why pick such a huge tractor as your first?

Barnyard, he is buying it because it is cheap! nobody wants it. Too old for somebody making a living at farming, and too big for a hobby farmer.
