Bitter harvest

Slowly working our way back to Sydney on the east coast of Australia. Talked to some farmers, many are in dire shape with the drought, low cattle prices, poor returns for milk and on and on. Many cattle were lost in severe storms in Queensland which followed a drought so severe that cattle were driven south on livestock routes to find feed and to market. Nearly all pastures are Brown and this field of corn will not yield much. Some government programs are in the works but for many it may be a case of too little too late. Those of us who take rainfall and water for granted should think again. The next world was will indeed be fought over water and not oil.

I have a friend who has a business brokering grain sales from Canadians to Chinese. I wish he could arrange some relief for Australians.

Saw a lot of sheep, but not very many goats. They could be in another part of the country

Hi Ben

Most of the goats are run in what we call the pastoral zone which is in the far west of NSW. This area used to be dominated by merino sheep for wool production, but since the wool price collapsed they have switched to goats which are easier to keep and there was already the feral ones there. Natural selection has made these tough animals. Meat bucks are being used to introduce new genetics. New breeds of meat sheep are also being run. In that area livestock are measured by acres to the animal. That corn crop looks very sad.
