Oil filter- Canister vs Spin On (anti-drain back valve)

I have noticed when I start my Ford 640 (after sitting for several days) it takes some time for the oil pressure to pick up. I know the canister oil filters do not have anti-drain back valve so I would think the oil drains out of everything and back into the pan. Would the conversion to a spin on filter with the anti-drain back valve eliminate this or do I have another problem?
 
I had same problem with my Jubilee.
Tried many different all filters would
drain back. Went to O Rielly and bought
a Micro guard. No more drain back.

I know the canister oil filters do not have anti-drain back valve ". Well, I can't be absolutely positive about your 640, but expect it to be same as NAA in that regard, which did have anti-drain back from factory. I'm not speaking for its effectiveness any more than I will speak to the effectiveness of same in a spin on filter, as I have examined the sorry looking loose fitting little flappers in those. Also, be aware that all spin on filters that will actually fit/screw on , do not have anti drain back flappers.
 
Do you know where the anti-drain back valve is in your NAA? Oil pump, block????

I looked at the exploded view from New Holland but can not find it. I would like to look at mine as I reassemble it and make sure it is in good working order.

t is this phenolic looking disk/diaphram with opening at top.

I think you have another problem. My 850d
has a wix spin on. My M has a cannister
upside down so it completely drains. Both
have good oil pressure as soon as they
crank.
 
My 861 has the oil inlet cast into the block kind of like the picture of the NAA. Built in anti-drain back.
 
The problem with MicroGard filters (if there is one) is that they have no manufacturing factories and purchase their filters from the cheapest supplier under contract. So ten years ago your MicroGard filter could be made by Fram, five years ago the filter could be a Purolator and today it could be made by Wix. However, if MicroGard now fixes all of your problems, by all means buy it.

That sounds like my IH truck engines. Be it the 304 V8 or the Black Diamond sixes. It takes a while for the oil pressure gauge to show pressure on start up. Its normal and does not seem to have harmed the engines. Both are the cannister style with replaceable element. On the six cylinder the filter is vertical above the mounting base. On the V8 the cannister hangs below the base. Both work the same.
 
The spin-on filter used on Fords is the Motorcraft FL1A, same as the Fram PH8A.

George's post about the MicroGard filter prompted me to check the filter specs for these filters on the O'Reilly website. (MicroGard is O'Reilly's store brand.) According to oreillyauto.com, both the FL1A and PH8A have anti-drainback valves. Which is not to say switching to a spin-on will cure your problem, but it couldn't hurt.
 
Micro guard filter stopped the drain back problem. All those you mentioned I tried, they didn't work.

I encourage others to try them and report your findings.

I had a 1985 Caprice with V-6 engine that we had to have the engine replaced (with a Jasper). I don't recall all the circumstances, but I know that at the time I kept thinking about the spin-on filter I had installed shortly before the engine failed. The filter was an unknown brand, maybe wrong or no valve in it. I just recall that at the time, I used it because I had it in our home shop and it screwed on ok. Could using a wrong filter have cost me an engine? Any knowledgeable replies appreciated!!

ot likely due to no anti-drain back valve, but if it didn't have a bypass valve AND it ran so long a period that filter clogged enough to stop oil flow, then maybe yes.
 
Your sketh supports my findings. Had a cannister on a '65 Ford 3000 and the cover had a drain plug which was suppose to be pointing down when the
cover was installed when changing filters. Reason was so that you could drain most of the oil out of the canister before you removed it...the next time
you changed your filter....and even then, it was always a mess.

Installed an spin on adapter and I use Fl-1As on all my Fords and any time I remove a filter for servicing, regardless if I just ran the tractor or has been
sitting for a few days, always have oil running out of the block when removing and the filter comes off full of oil.
