hard shifting on 1964 Minneapolis Moline Jetstar 3

Tractor has ampli torque. I have difficult time shifting when in high range especially if I am pushing on something. If I move ampli torque into low range it shifts easily. Just changed the fluid with sae 80 multi purpose. Didn't seem to help.

Also does anyone know what type of hydraulic fluid to use? It has a loader. The manual just says telo Flo. I replaced it with Fleet Farm universal hydraulic/transmission fluid and everything quit working and when I dropped it out it was very foamy. I replaced it with John Deere Hy Gard TM and everything started working again. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't potentially damaging the system.

Thanks.

Scott

The hard shifting in high range is normal, just like with the Farmall TA. In high range, you are in direct drive and the gears are loaded when pushing with the loader. The solution is to pull the Amplitorque into low, then shift.

The Hy Gard in the hydraulic system is fine.

I had MM 670 and a Oliver 880 They both did the same. In high you are in two gears at the same time. When you start to move one gear moves faster and unlocks the sprage clutch

If I was you I go back to thinner lube. The heavy lube may keep the roller in the sprage clutch from rolling

I think it's the Beast in the tractor. My 602 does the same thing, when I am using the loader, I have to put in low-range to shift gears. Not the most User Friendly, but then again, I don't have much money in it either.

My M5 is the same and I think that is why the TA on an International has a second linkage that releases the TA clutch putting it into low
range when the main Clutch is in the full released position. On an IH it's easy to tell when this is out of adjustment and you have to pull
the TA lever to accomplish the same thing.
