LeroyINNeb; Others; Dump Rake Question

I have and use an IHC Dump Rake. I seem to remember old, narrow car tires dangling inside each rake wheel. Was the purpose to keep the hay out of the wheels or keep it inside the teeth, or both? Second, was the wheel removed to put those onto the rake? Thanks, kelly

FUNNY how those "farmer fixes" get around.

I've got two old "horse rakes"(as my late Dad called 'em) with car tires inside the steel wheels.

AFAIK, the reason was to keep LONG material from going around with the wheels and wrapping up around the axle.

And, for sure, the steel wheels would have to be taken off to install the "antiwrap" car tires.

Yes, in my area of northern New England they all had the tires to, as Bob said, to keep the long stuff from getting caught in the spokes and wrapping up.

You can take a Dump Rake and cut the hubs out of the spokes and then cut the wheel in one place and then roll out the wheel so all the spokes are sticking straight up do the same with the other wheel and then lay them so the spokes are just together then weld the spokes together and you then have a good Barn Yard Gate. . Old Scovy.
