12 v starter for 1952 Super A

Can anyone advise a part number for a 12v starter for a 1952 Super A. My tractor has been converted to 12v and I can not find any numbers on this starter to be able to order a new one.

Thanks

My 1950 Farmall C has a 6v starter. I
couldn't find a 12v starter anyplace.
After replacing the starter drive twice I
decided to use my weakest 12v lawn mower
battery and 12g wires in place of
starter cables.

No longer shear off starter drives. My
tractor has a mag and was designed to
hand crank. So I don't have to spin
tractor very fast to start.

On the other hand if you don't have a
mag, going with a mower battery may not
provide a hot spark without bypassing
ballast resistor while cranking engine.

Almost all my tractors are 12 volt and they all have 6 volt starters on them and have for decades. No need to find a 12 volt starter a 6 volt one will work just fine

Just use your 6v starter. Make sure you keep tractor tuned up so it fires right off when your starting it. It's
when you grind and grind on the starter to get tractor started that causes starter damage.

If there is a good starter/alternator/generator shop near by, they "might" be able to look at it and come up with a set of 12v field windings for it. Even if they can't, they may be able to repair your old original starter. The originals are better than the new aftermarkets.

Like others said, it's not that the starter will burn up, it's that it slams the drive into the flywheel. Some handle it well, some don't. Depends on the design of the starter.

Also depends on the condition of the flywheel gear, and how often it gets started. Be sure the ignition timing is right, not too fast and kicking back. Also, if the drive kicks out, wait for the starter and engine to both come to a complete stop before hitting the starter switch again.

Just get one from HARVEY BROS they are the best rebuilders in business. Yours could possibly be rebuilt. You can use the original 6v ones but make sure your ring gear is good pull the old one off and by turning engine over you can check the teeth. If you have a bad spot you need to replace the ring gear

agree with the "slamming"! I started my Farmall SMTA off 12v a couple of times & it sounded like two freight train cars coupling! If I were to convert it to 12v, I would look into the use of shunt coil addition with a good rebuilder. My Ford 8N has been 12v for nearly 30 years and it doesn't seem unhappy, as the Farmall did.

I sheared off a starter drive and chipped a tooth on the starter ring on Jubilee. That's when I decided to buy 12v starter from YT. I used a magnet and fished out many parts from previously broken starter drives.

A good battery and cold oil in winter is a good formula for shearing off starter drives. I lost a total of 4 drives, 2 on Jubilee and 2 on Farmall C.

I havve been using 12 volts on 2 tractors with original 6 volt starters for years, a Farmall SMTA and JD 430 I haven't had any problems with starter or starter drives on either. I think it is prudent to not roll them over for too long at a time without a break.

Comon George, you were the one telling us to get the smallest 12volt lawn and garden battery and connect with steel flat washers to save the 6 volt starters.

I couldn't find a 12v starter for Farmall C. So yes I used a old mower battery. I was able to get a 12 v starter for Jubilee.

I haven't had any more shared starter drives on either tractor.
