Toro dingo Kubota diesel Dies restarts

Have a Toro Dingo, with a 3 cyl Kubota diesel. It will run, but often will die, almost like its out of fuel, but then it will start back up no problem, but is liable to die again. Seams worst in cooler temps (phx area, so not below freezing) or with a cold engine. At all throttle levels it is prone to die, though generally it is not until a load is placed on it that it dies. Can die 10-15 times in ten min and then run for an hour.

Any thoughts on the cause?

Not familiar with which engine is on it, but some of those small Kubotas have a 'start' solenoid and others have a 'shutdown' solenoid that is only energized to shut them down. Usually when the 'shutdown' solenoid version fails, the engine just doesn't stop.

If yours has the 'start' solenoid that pulls a lever or link (or pulls a plunger back if its bolted into the block) I would check the wiring to the 'hold' part of that solenoid. It has three wires and 2 circuits: One pulls the plunger in when the engine is started and the other holds it in after it starts. The 'hold' windings in the solenoid don't draw as much current as the 'pull' windings, so the solenoid doesn't burn up while the engine is running. That is why it has the 2 circuits.

Anyways, any interruption in the current to the 'hold' part of the solenoid will shut down the engine. It could be the ignition switch, a relay, a safety switch, or just a bad connection anywhere in the circuit. It could also be a bad ground connection.

Another place to look is the boost pump that supplies low pressure flow to the injector pump. Not familiar with the Dingo application, but a lot of the small diesel powered equipment also has a filter/strainer in the tank that can get plugged.

I had a similar issue on a backhoe, found the fuel filter seal was sucking just a bit of air, unless something else has drastically changed on your machine, I would suspect fuel system is sucking air, likely filter, or rubber line deteriorated?

Ran to near empty on gas the other day, and refilled, didn't seam dirty. The gas cap, can't say as its a good vent, but it's certainly not a tight seal-plastic and broken, so we've covered it with a pvc pipe cap to keep the fuel clean. New $70 fuel filter made no difference. It's a shut down solenoid, and it don't move when it dies on its own. Believe the motor is a Family SKB719u6d2Ra.

Did find some little relay/fuse like pieces and swap them around, thinking that may have helped, and also the air filter was a mess.

If we figure out more, and I think of it, will try to report back.
