i notice on the john deere b there is a grounding lug on the mag to shut the engine off, buy no lug on the A,..how do you shut the A off with no grounding lug ???

Mine's a distributor but I think they intended the throttle to be pushed past idle to completely close the throttle plate. That's why it has the spring stop on the carb in stead of a pin. Maybe the B had the mag swapped out at some time.

Most of the original mags had no grounding terminal. Tractors were run on Kerosene or distillate so turning off the fuel was the way to shut down. The carb had to be totally drained and refilled with gasoline the to start the next day anyway, so no problem.

My dad used to idle it down and choke it to kill it. When he put the old A away for the winter he would choke it to kill it, then turn off the fuel after it died. Next spring he had to put a crowbar in the flywheel to break it loose. I was too young at the time to know better. I still have that tractor and I kill it by turning off the gas. It hasn't stuck since even if it sits a couple years. My neighbor had a 39 B that was so tired he would idle it down then lean his hip at the overall pocket into the flywheel to kill it. I tried that with our 35 A and burned a hole in my pants.

The late "B" and "A" with 67 and 71 carb respectively, are designed to shut down with the throttle all way back. They still have the spring and stop pin but the idle ports inside the bore are placed in such a manner that the throttle plate completely covers the last one when all way back. It will instantly shut down. If not you have other issues to address.

Hope this helps.

My 49 B with mag and 51 A with distributor both would shut off when throttle was completely closed. Hated that as when you wanted to idle tractor it went to shot off instead of idle so readjusted throttle to get idle without stopping. The A had a switch. to stop the 49 B and 46 B and 38 A put in 6th gear, A 4th as no 6th, and held brakes and partily enguaged clutch to shut off, Later changed mag on 49 B to distributor. Never shut off fuel on any of them.

That is why we worked on ours to make sure it sid not do that because every time we wanted to idle the engine it would shut off and we did not want that.
