Oil soaking posts

cvphoto16994.jpg

I cut these locust posts and want to soak the ends in used oil. Anyone tried that to extend longevity? I am thinking a metal trash can. I?d rather not have a full 55 gallon drum of old oil. Seems too awkward in size.

I didn't see your other post before I answered your first. I think I can see that you had your post sawed. I do know that split post will last a lot longer than sawed ones. The reason, I have been told is splitting them don't open up the pores as sawing does. Locust post don't split very hard by hand either.

I have split them before. These are sawn lengthwise and squared with a chainsaw. I plan to use them around the house so want them looking good.

My daddy use to soak pine post for fence post. I know you have locust. Any way he would soak the whole post. The post that are over in the woods that don't stay in direct sunlight are still good. Put in the ground in 1971.
