Oil bath air cleaner

(quoted from post at 11:28:22 03/17/19) Anyone use used motor oil in them. I think it should work just fine and not wast $ on new oil.

It is already dirty!!

The engine takes 9 qts and I think about a qt for the air cleaner.

Does the oil in the cleaner actually get pulled into the engine? or
does it just collect the dust from The air flowing past it.

the dirt or solids are slammed into the oil when its sucked into the cleaner, then the cleaned air is sucked into the intake. you want the oil heavy enough NOT to be sucked into the engine. you can use heavier oil in the summer. oil bath is a very effective cleaner. I cant see using dirty oil in them but it will work if you had to do that.

I've read some suggestions over the years here on YT as to how to save a buck or two. Using used motor oil in an oil bath air cleaner about tops the list. Can you imagine the holidays we could all go on if we did this instead of using fresh new oil .... ha !!! Sorry for poking fun but some things are beyond belief.

I think I'd want to strain it through a t-shirt or something.

O5, I think the main thing is ensure SOME manner of oil is in the cup. I've drug many an old heap home and found nada of water in the cup. Pretty much ANY oil beats THAT. gm ;-)

Have not used second hand motor oil in the oil bath cleaners because it looks pretty black usually. But I've used trans hydraulic oil because it usually looks almost as clean as new when I drain the newer tractor hydraulic systems. I figure it will catch plenty of dust in the oil bath air cleaner. Just another form or re-cycling.

Count me in ......... I strain my old tractor crankcase oil through paint funnel strainers.
I believe the oil never makes it to the engine, and as long as it's liquid it catches dirt just fine.
Course I don't disk or grade gravel roads with my antique tractors.

Got an old Case tractor sitting out back with a big square oil bath air cleaner. Cast right into the metal case says, "Clean daily and refill with used motor oil." No, the oil does not get sucked into the engine.

Never used used oil as there is already dirt in there to be sucked up into the mesh that is almost impossible to get cleaned. I just used the cheapest oil I could get, did not mater on weight of oil. But then I was not running in 20 below weather. And this was when all tractors on farm had the oil bath type. Still what my 2 Fords have. The Ford 5000 that I farmed with had the oil bath but same age 4000 had paper filter, always thought oil bath was better. But some of my oil bat cleaners took a quart and 3/4 of the second. Now if the used engine oil still looked like new then I might have tried it but when engine was drained the oil was to contaminated to ever try it to spend extra money because of that dirt making the oil bath not working correctly. Same thing with the car and truck oil bath type.
