I didn't know that anybody made a diesel that ran on reduced cylinders when not under a load.

Agree! Did IH intentionally misspell "Baler" for some kind of gimmicky advertising purpose or did some museum employee misspell it when they made the decal for the restoration?
 
Not sure why IH felt the need to have the injection pump of the DV-550 in both the 1468 & 1568 idle on 4 cylinders and run under load on all 8. They didn't have the truck engines run that way.

First summer the 1468's were built a couple guys took their new tractors on tour of the local county fair pulling circuit. Quickly proved there was no replacement for boost from a turbo and that the in line 6's could handle WAY more boost than the DV-550.
 
Nice pictures. The 1026 gold (one of a kind) was restored by a friend of mine. I saw this tractor when it came from the south and watched the restoration progress. Helped a little but mainly stayed out of the way. Did drive it some around the shop during the restoration. Sold to Stew for his collection and a nice home.
 
Yes they did have them in trucks, we had 2 COE single axle tractors on city p n d.Spent more time in the dealership because of oil leaks that we fixed in our shop.
 
I sure do not want to start an argument but I had three of the trucks that were what the engine was built for and they defiantly idled on 4 at a red light then smoked like heck when you took off. The td 20 c dozer is the only application I know of that did not do that. ay have been some trucks ,but when the engine came out that was the selling point save that fuel. My experience with that engine is if you had 100 you probably had 50 real goods ones and 50 dogs. Something about them hard to work on and harder to get right. IH changed the turbo set up right quick after they came out to give more air but they still just were marginal.
 
I was not old enough to drive during the hey day of those engines but I remember the guys saying just as you are saying who did operate them. Those engines came to be right around the oil embargo of 1973 so there was definite thought for operation when peak power output was not required. About the only V8 that shined in a farm tractor application was the Cat 3208. Inline 6's were and still are the kings for large farm tractors.
 

I visited there maybe ten years ago. He sure has added a lot since then. The big building had just a few pieces in it. Thanks for the pics.
 
No V-8 Diesel has yet to this day has impressed me, not the 903 Cummins,the 8-71 Detroit,or the IHC 550, and John Deere even tried it in the big farm tractor,well it didn't last long did it, they don't have enough main bearging's for one thing, and they don't have the guts either !!
