Propane refills

Anyone bought one of those refill couplings to fill 1 lb bottles from 20 lb cylinder? Thye one that look to be just a female and male end, and you lay the cylinder on it's side? Do they work well. O/m using a lot of the small bottles on my tabletop smoker/Barbie.

Thought about buying one a few years ago, from what I read they do work, better results were supposed to be had if you put the empty bottle in the freezer overnight before filling.

Instead I bought an adapter hose that has a fitting on one end that goes onto a 20 lb cylinder and the other end has a fitting that is the same as the end of a small cylinder so it screws onto the stove in place of the bottle.
Also comes in handy for use with the small propane torch heads.

The grill I use it for spends most of it's time with our camper, it already has 2 big tanks on it so it is cheaper to use those instead of the small bottles.

For the occasional shore lunch while out fishing one small bottle will last us all summer.

It works better if the 20 lb is upside down.

And if you get a blast of propane to your hand it will give you a severe case of frost bite , not that it has ever happened to me , or at least I ain't admitting to being a dumb arse , LOL .

In addition to putting the empty in the freezer before filling, you can also set the 20 pounder in a bucket of hot water when you're ready to transfer. It works, but you can't get 80% fill no matter what you do.

Newer 20# propane tanks have an internal shutoff valve that will prevent liquid propane from flowing out when tank is in erted. No go from me.

Somethings that I learned many years ago. On the 20lb tank look at the side of the valve. There should be a little slotted screw maybe 5/16 across. When you get the tank filled you want to crack that valve open just a bit. When the tank is almost full liquid will start to spit out of that little bleed valve. Will let you get almost another pound of LP in the tank. Now on the little toy tanks many of them have a bleeder that is the same as a tire shrader valve. When you are filling your little tank you want to take a BIC pen and push that valve open. Look at the top of a regular blue propane cylinder to see one. Not for nonprofessional trained DIY Crowd if you get my meaning. View this video. It is pretty good. Shows you the bleed valves.
Filling bottles

I bought a 4' hose at Academy Sports & Outdoors that connect's 20 pound tank to appliances that take 1 pound bottles.

They do work, but if your using them at home you should get a hose. Putting the small bottles in the freezer helps,The big tank must be inverted, and having the big tank warm helps. I have had the small tanks leak after filling, then you have to connect them to an appliance, use them up and dispose. I use a few for a Buddy heater and small lantern that must be portable.

I use them all the time. My coupler says to open the valve with the big tank upside down. If you put the empties in the freezer for a couple of hours, you will get a better fill. Go directly from the freezer to the coupler. I can usually get them about 3/4 full.
