A older fellow not too far away has a '91 full-sized Dodge shortbox regular cab for sale. It's got 95000 miles on it and has been taken care of and all the repairs and maintenance has been documented. It has an automatic transmission with a V6 engine. My question is, would this vehicle be able to tow any sort of a flatbed trailer? Say a 14 foot dual axel trailer with a small 3000 pound tractor on it? Distances would not be great, probably 50-60 miles each time it was used (which wouldn't be that often). And also, what would be a decent price for such a truck? Any suggestions (positive or negative) would be appreciated.

I have a new Dakota with the 3.9. I pulled my Wd tractor (#3500), with loaded tires (#1200) and front end loader (#1200). Plus the trailer (#1000). I doubt you would have any problem whatsoever.

Ive got a 92 Dakota with a 3.9 liter ,5 speed ,with over 185,000 miles on it , doesn't use oil , no smoke , been an excellent truck , but I didn't buy it to work , bought it to drive to work , 75 miles round trip , the most I've pulled with it is a 14 foot cattle trailer with about 2500-3000 lb. of calves or a 16 foot trailer with a Ford 2000 on it , it pulled it but never got in 5th gear , pretty much of a strain on it , I usually use my 1500 Dodge with a 360 to do the real work .

Stay away from it!!! It's a gutless wonder!! Had one in a Dakota, useless in a head wind!! Would never think of towing with it,that's for sure!! Do yourself a favor get a V-8 or Slant-6 in a Dodge.

Use Amsoil synthetic ATF and you will not be sorry.

If the owners manual hasn't been lost, the factory towing rating is in there. Don't exceed hitch & gross weight the engineers designed the vehicle for. Everyone else is on the road along with you & your truck. It's likely rated class II or maybe class III. I just picked up our Jimmy 4x4 from the transmission shop this morning after dropping $2300.00 Canadain peso's. Can't complain it has 157,000 miles on it, some towing 5000lb loads in the summer. Get a trans cooler, shift kit & fill the tranny with synthetic ATF. It would have went farther but a vacuum sensor failed & pulled atf into the engine & lowered the level enough to slip & wear the direct clutch packs.

A fullsize car will pull that much. You shouldn't have a problem pulling that plus ,just keep it out of overdrive and don't force it too hard in hills

Amer Mech; I have a 14', dual axle trailer and pull a cub low boy. I have a 5 speed, 4 cly. GMC Sonoma pick up. I don't use 5th gear, there are no hills. I wouldn't recommend this setup to anyone but your truck should do OK. One suggestion, make sure that you have elec. trailer brakes.
