Farmall 806 Diesel engine block

What is the issue with the old style engine block that were in the farmall 806 diesel, someone was telling me they cracked and it was due to the fact of it having or not having cooler jets for the liners. What causes this to happen and or is it something a guy like me should worry about if buying a 806 diesel. I was just curious, have also heard that the 856 is a better tractor. Really would liken the 806 though.

The 806 engine/block is about as bullet proof as it gets. And probably the longest lifed engine IH ever built. The issue you are hearing about is where guys put turbos on em and crank up the fuel. They try to make a 1206 out of an 806.yep,they will crank out the ponies, but they cant take the extra heat. There is where th cooling jets come in. A 1206 has two,806 only one. A naturally asperated engine wot have that problem. The 361(806) and 407(856)are essentially the 'same' engine.

I thought the early model blocks didn?t have engine cooling pistons. I thought it was on the later style blocks.

As delta said the cooling jets for the 1206 and the 8's don't have enough when guys turboed them and put the fuel to it.
I've owned my 806 since 1978 with few problems and never changed a block. It used to be the big horse with lots of heavy tillage work plowing and disking. Now just a putter tractor.

Okay was just making sure cause what y’all are saying makes sense had other people tell me some other stuff.

I think every manufacturer has had it's lemons and if they survived those would up with some pretty good stuff. IMO the 806 along with the JD 4020 were to of the best built tractors of it's day. I know some farmers who 12,000 or more trouble free hours on those 2 models. That isn't saying there were not other competing tractors that were not good tractors. IMO those 2 were as good as it got. Lot of em still around today.

That last sentence is the one you need to pay attention to. If they had a block cracking problem they would have little to no value and few would still be out there.
