Ford 4630 vs Ford 5030

I have 3 cyl Ford diesels and they run pretty smooth. Also have a 4 cyl 2000 and it runs even smoother. I used to have 3 JD 6 cyls and they were really
smooth. On that part, smoother running. On frame, not familiar with them but my JDs were row crops and lots of climbing to get to your work station.
Currently don't have that problem and it's better on tired old legs. One Ford is a 3910 that is an earlier 30 series and it's a small frame, under 50 hp but
OEM setup up for Cat I or II. Gives me the whoope of the larger frame without the size.

The difference is the engine, radiator and hood.
I have a 5030 with FWA in my shop now.
It's basically a 5610's four cylinder engine on a smaller 4630 chassis giving the tractor 10 more pto hp.
Comparable in size to Kubota's older 6800 or newer 7040.
I wanted a 5030 for many years as a one tractor operation but now have a 4000, 5000 and 6610 so not as interested today.
The only down side to a 5030 is it's radiator, in order to cool the larger 256 engine with the shorter hood profile the radiator is thicker and has a very close fin spacing. Because of the fin spacing the radiator gets plugged with trash easier and is a little harder to clean when flushing the trash out of the fins.
The radiator for a 5030 only fits a 5030 and cost over 2 times more than one for a 4630, other wise it's a very versatile tractor with plenty of power for it's size, there are times in our poultry operation that i still wish i had one.

What transmissions are you looking at on these models?
I have a strong opinion about one of the transmissions that was available for these models.

I'm not sure on transmission. Its what i consider the basic standard fool prof Ford transmission which is 4 forward and 1 reverse with the high low option which would give you 8 forwards and 2 reverses. Hope that this helps and look forward to your opinion.

Thank You

We had a 5030. 4WD loader with the synchro transmission with the dash mount forward reverse shifter. Don't miss having it around at all.
Always running hot, tiny fuel tank, finicky remote couplers. Then the transmission failed.

Thanks for the detail. I drove one of these back in the 90's when it was new, had New Holland decals It had the 8x8 and was ROPS fwa and 7310 loader.

Seemed like a nice simple, heavy tractor for it's size. Lots of power.

The upside down 4 speed pattern was weird to me and still remember having to turn the 4 way flashers on with a switch on the fender too.

This particular one had an aftermarket loader joystick and dual remotes.

QA on the 7310 loader was weaker than SSQA.

Did you figure out what caused the transmission to fail ? D..450 had posted years ago about the pick-up screen on these, can easily miss servicing. I did mine on a 4630 with the same trans, not much too it, and there was not much to clean either. A long time ford dealer mechanic said they howl like heck when plugged.

That's the best transmission to have on those tractors.
The 8x8 synchro shuttle trans is ok if it's been serviced regularly, many didn't know it has a oil pump and screen on the bottom of the trans, if not serviced regularly the screen would plug starving the pump and bearings.
The 16x8 synchro shuttle is the worst, it has the same suction screen with a aluminum oil pump, once this pump failed the dual power clutches would burn up.
Many of the parts for that trans have been discontinued, I have one in my storage trailer for parts for that reason.

If you have a need for a smaller chassis tractor with 65 pto hp the 5030 is worth looking at, if you can make do with a 55 pto hp tractor I recommend you consider a 4630.

On cleaning a tractor radiator, especially with AC and hydro oil cooler, I took about a 30" piece of ⅜ copper tubing, sealed the lower end and adapted a
shut off valve and male industrial air fitting on the other. Near the bottom I drilled about a half a dozen .10" through holes in the tubing so that air would
shoot out both sides. Hook it up to whatever pressure that suits you, adjustable with the valve on the end and blow it out dry. Works much better for me
than using the water hose.
