1947 John deere A starter noise

Model A man

Hi, I went to start up my John Deere A and when I hit the starter there was A grinding noise coming from under the flywheel cover. I've read articles and tried to pull start and the engine is not locked up someone pls help.

Did you did you try the starter after you turned the engine over to find out it’s free? Could be a bad spot in the flywheel ring gear too. Put the transmission in neutral, engage the clutch and with the ignition switch TURNED OFF turn the engine over just a bit by turning the clutch pulley by hand. It will turn very hard you might have to rock it a bit but you only need to turn it an inch, maybe a bit more. Then try the starter. If it still grinds you probably have a bad starter drive.
