640 Ford. How do I remove the distributor and shaft? The manual is unclear and I have removed the hold down screws and tabs but it won’t give.

You need to rotate it and pull up at the same time. Many times since they have not been moved if decades they get a bit rusty and then get hard to pull. Be sure to mark where #1 plug wire sits to make it easy to reinstall it plus do not move the engine any so you can time it easy

Probly just seased up. Should be able to turn it to free it up. Be sure you know where the rotar is at inside of
cap before removing. Don't turn engine over, and when you reinstall distributor, make sure rotar ends up in the
same place as before. Helps tremendously when re-timing it.

It's probably stuck with carbon build up.

If you can get it to turn, work it back and forth while pulling up. Something to try, once you get it up just a little, spray some carb cleaner down around the housing where it goes into the block. It will dissolve the carbon, let it come out easier.

As everyone else has said but one more thing. Mark the stupid wires. At the cap
and the plug. A tiny dab of paint or something. My dad would just RIP
everything off and then take an hour to get everything back together. The other
thing is if you park a tractor with some cows they will pull all of the wires
off. I know international harvester distributors have a tiny little tick mark
on the lip of the distributor body to show where number one is for the rotor
position. Very handy. That little tick mark should be about the 2 O,clock
position as should be the number one wire. Looking at your picture you must
have something close. Very carefully turn the engine by hand till the rotor
comes to the number one position. Now you know where.
