Still have bugs in the system. New alternator, new battery. The altnerator according to the specs has an internal regulator.
When I put the battery in the tractor and test the battery it is right at 12 volts. When I start the tractor and leave the tester on the battery it will charge up to 16 volts. Is that normal? When should the regulator kick in and reduce the current? Is there anything else that could cause it to over charge? When I used it last heard this popping sound and when I checked the battery split in the back. Seem to be at a brick wall on this one. Thanks.

Replace the battery if it?s split it probably has something internally wrong . You should charge at about 14.5 volts

Sixteen volts is too high.

Most likely a defective alternator. You could take it to an auto supply and have it tested, preferably where you bought it.

If bought online, have it tested, if bad notify them and start the return.

If it tests good revisit the wiring, but more likely to be the alternator itself.

The battery should read 12.6 volts when disconnected and charged. If it is cracked replace it. With a known good or new battery, the charging voltage should be at 14.2 to 14.6 volts. Jim
