2nd biggest crane in the world

See if I can post a picture. This is view from the hill behind our farm. This is the construction site of the Shell cracker plant being built in Beaver County, PA.

I live about two miles away from Beaver County in Allegheny County. I am in sewickley (actually Bell acres) across the river from the cracker plant.

Try again

What is a cracker plant? Just an ignorant upper Midwesterner that isn't from an industrial area that doesn't understand the vernacular. jal-SD

I believe "cracker" refers to a refinery, that "cracks" petroleum products to make all sorts of other petroleum products, gasoline, diesel, plastics, etc. They "crack" the long petroleum molecules and reassemble the fragments.

It will covert ethane that is abundant in the shale gas into ethylene. The ethylene is then used to produce polyethylene and other plastics at other plants. About 2500 workers on site now, 6000+ later this year. The plant will be finished in 2021 and permanently employ about 600.

I know this isn't the biggest by any means but it's still something cool to see. I went a couple years ago. It's called Big Brutus.

That is a Mammoet. They are from the Netherlands.
About a 3000 MT class crane.
They have taken that thing all over the world.

Biggest is a relative term that everyone tries to say.
It way even be the biggest swing crane.
But is no match for some stiff leg cranes mounted on ships or barges.

The one down at the ship yard in Newport News VA is huge, worked there in the 70's for awhile main crane ran on tracks like a railroad and had smaller cranes in it.

Nice post Philcase........I drove by there yesterday; estimate crane about 350 feet high. I
worked as a plant/maintenance engineer for the old St Joe Zinc Company formerly on the same site. IIRC elevation of Ohio River pool was 682 feet above sea level and the surrounding hill tops approximately 1100 feet elevation. Not much farm land around Racoon/Potter townships; where is your place.

It is actually about 800+ ft high. When you're on the highway by the plant it doesn't look like it. My dad and uncle worked at St Joe as did I during college. Our farm is right up the hill from the plant. We about Shells property. I'll try a picture from my back yard.

That is huge. I thought this crane used to replace the boilers at Bruce A was large but it is a toy by comparison .

Big Brutus is extremely cool, you can go up inside it and wander around, several floors. Used to, you could crawl out on the boom as far as you dared, but for some reason they've stopped that. VEREY cool to take your kids to, they will wander around inside and get lost, lots of fun. Columbus Kansas.

That's not a crane. THIS is a crane! [Go to Newport News Shipbuilding crane. Picks up segments of aircraft carriers.]

I've been all the way to the top of the boom, and so have my kids. You can see for many miles from up there.

A few years back, before it was fenced, somebody thought it would be fun to "basejump" from the top of the boom. He apparently got in there when the place was closed and tried it. They found him when they opened up. His chute did not work as planned. Since that event, the management installed a barrier to keep people from climbing the boom.

I have seen Big Brutus - it was the largest strip mine shovel West of the Mississippi. The bucket is 99 yards, big enough for I think 4 or so Chevy pickups. Not sure on the amount of trucks, but 99 yard bucket is correct. The picture does not do it justice. Bob
