Roof/barn painters

Each summer I get hit with the same deal. Guys from SC stop and think I should repaint my rusty roof on the old hip roof barn. I am always told it wont last a year or two longer before rusting through. This has been going on for close to 25 years! Each time they stop they act like they have never seen me before. Always throwing names around of neighbors they just finished up painting for. They stay for a day or two in the area then blow out. Then in a week or two a second group who claim to not know the first pull the same line. Second group always pitches a much lower price. Each time a guy stops in with a beat up truck with spilled paint and over spray all over it. Is there a lot of barn painters From SC or do these guys really move around? Just seems strange that I have never had anyone stop wanting to paint my barns or bins from any other state. Just the state of South Carolina. In the last 3-4 years I have been getting hit with a guy or lady with SC plates trying to sell me china made tools. Pick up truck with a tondu cover filled with tools, jacks, man toys. Always trying to sell them quick to head back home. Prices start really high then fall as soon as they find out you are not interested. These folks stop in the late fall. I remember this because they are complaining about how cold it is getting. I always tell them to wait around a few weeks and it will get much worse. Are these the roof guys in the off season?? Al

The Travelers (descendents of the Irish Travellers use two Ls in the name, other sects do not) have a fairly large population in SC. It is a bit early this year, but annually they hit the highway to "travel" and scam some more money. Some paint, some pour oil on driveways and call it sealant, some do horrible paving, and a few others sell stolen meat out of the back of a pickup. They used to not mind being called Gypsies but now many take offense. Travelers, Gypsies, and Roaders are all nomadic, tribal folks.

The group of Travelers are most likely from the Edgefield / Aiken county area in South Carolina. I provided appraisals for a highway project several years ago in the area. There houses are the size of small churches. Very unusual group of people. The best advice I could give is "BEWARE".

The guy I used were from augusta they painted roofs on cow barn and garage for 1000 dollars dad did it 25 years ago with a roller a bucket and rope tied to his waist I didnt want to fall so I had them paint it and wrote it off on taxes

They're the same clan that sued Disney World after a woman let her brother assault her in her room, then claimed it was done by a stranger and there was lack of security at a Disney hotel.

Sounds like the group that comes around in the summer wanting to pave your driveway for little to nothing, and that is what you will end up with LITTLE TO NOTHING.

Sounds like the good old North American free market economy to me. Are they doing anything illegal? Same thing done by everyone from big box stores to your local car dealership, everyone out to fleece a guy out of his hard earned money.

My group always comes from Tennessee, but with Texas plates.

They must have fallen on hard times, used to be a shiny pickup and a well used painting pickup. The last few years it?s a shiny pickup and a trailer with the equipment on the trailer.

They aren?t great, but you know they get an out building painted which I wouldn?t get around to, so I?ve used them for metal painting and the big barn. Same fellas dad would come around and paint for dad, I think now I haven?t seen the fella the past 2 years, he was getting pretty old and his wife was in poor health the last time he was buy. Very slow spoken southern guy, and always a dark skinned fella doing the actual work real odd work conditions/ relationship to this northern fella!

I had those guys come through several years ago and same story. Same guy. They came for several years and finally offered to paint a 48 X 32 pole building roof pretty cheap
I don't remember the price but they did it and for a year or two it looked pretty bright, but in three years the rust was showing through and now it's all brown. They painted over the fiberglass skylights. Think it is time for a new roof now, about 35 years old. Any ideas? BTW haven't seen those painters since. They wanted to paint all the slate roofs also. I wasn't that stupid.

(quoted from post at 10:21:40 03/12/19) Sounds like the good old North American free market economy to me. Are they doing anything illegal? Same thing done by everyone from big box stores to your local car dealership, everyone out to fleece a guy out of his hard earned money.

When nothing is in writing, it's impossible to prove any wrongdoing in a court of law, but these people lie about the quality of the materials they use, lie about the quality of the job they perform, sometimes even lie about completing the job, hoping you won't look before they have cash in hand and truck in road.

Normally when you deal with a contractor, you get everything in writing down to the last detail. That way you have recourse should you pursue it if the contractor does not make good.

In fact all these places you claim are only out to "fleece" people provide a means of recourse, in that you can take the item back for a refund within a reasonable timeframe. These travelers provide no such recourse.

I had a couple of guys from South Carolina stop by and wanted to paint a small shed roof I had that was starting to rust. The price was right and I had seen some of their work, so I hired them. It looked very good. For a year or two afterwards they would stop and see how the roof was. It lasted very good. I couldn't have done it any better or as quick. So you see there are some good and honest folks around.
