My brother has a 99 f250 7.3 , he had it in his shop all winter painting the frame fixing rusted body work ect, thanks NY for putting down so much salt on the roads!!! he took it out today and it's stuck in 4x4 at the transfer case, it will not disengage from 4x4? He looked on the net for any help but can't seem to find any, I hate that stupid dial vs the floor stick, now he's wondering if he can convert the transfer case to a floor stick as he saw the way the transfer case is with were it looks like you could make some linkage to make it manual shift! Any one know what may be wrong with it, or if you can convert it to manual shift?
We also had trouble with the crap ford hubs, I chucked mine and put warn manual lock hubs, never a problem again.

I have the manuals for my truck he can use but there hard to understand!

Could be a bad shift motor but you need to check fuses and check for power at the switch and at the shift motor itself

I don't know if it went into 99 but earlier in the 90s, Warn made the hubs for Ford. Both the "auto locking" and manual type. The guys I worked with at Warn kind of joked about getting to make the same hubs twice for those trucks.

Jay I have a 01 f250 with electric shift. Was told to change to manual shift have to change the transfer case. I have juice to switch but none to shift motor. Fuses are good. I don t know if juice goes thru relay to switch or vice versa. Don t have 4x4 I know that. Would like 4x4 to be working truck is for sale. RB

Sometimes taking off the shift motor and manually running the transfer case through the gears with a wrench and then re installing the motor will make it work again.

I don't have an opinion on what the problem might be, but if if it can be converted to manual operation, and some of the electronics eliminated, I would go for it.

ive had descent luck switching on the 4wh and crawling under them and tapping on the shift motor and the case. seems like if those older ones sit around in that corrosive environment they need a little love tapping. then work it a few more times.

I know my chev if I put it in low range you have to go back to 4wheel high then to 2 wheel it wont make the jump from 4 low to 2 hi, have you tried backing up ?

there are 2 relays under the hood one runs the motor clock wise one runs it counter clock wise. the controller for the 4x4 is behind the glove box. the controller grounds the relays, based on inputs from the dash switch, to move the transfer case motor one direction or the other.

tell him to try this:
Start the truck, put the transmission in neutral, shift the transfer case to 2wd, then shift to reverse and back up 10 or 15 feet.

If it is in low range you have to push the brake pedal and be in neutral to shift out of low. If it is stuck in 4 hi try what others have said.

My brother found the problem, the shift motor was corroded so bad it would not work, I guess he's getting one from a junk yard for $50 bucks, thanks for the help and replies.
