I've always most liked Lolita's German version of this song, but Petula Clark's version is a close second.

Most sincere thanks to all of our veterans.

Thanks for your service Big Tee.

FWIW, though not a veteran, my Mother was a WWII veteran. She spent three years as a US Army Nurse in the South Pacific.

Hopefully, you will appreciate the German language version.

Yankee station, flight deck of the USS Hancock about 11:00 at night waiting for a recovery. Someone played that song and then "Up on the Roof" over the ships loud speakers. We had been at flight quarters for almost 36 hours and really needed the boost.

We all have memories leaving loved ones as we boarded planes, or ships, and left them standing as we departed the States. I still remember my Dad and Mother, and my girl friend watching me leave for the Philippines on a C118 prop plane in 1965. Just memories now. Stan

Nice song.

Good to see a bunch of shipmates around. 2 years in Holy Loch, 2 1/2 on the Coral Sea and 2 on tugs in Norfolk...

What we left behind, was no longer there when we returned. I recall first overseas deployment June 1961 at McGuire Airbase in New Jersey I would be leaving in a couple hours. There was an airman leaving and his wife (?, I suppose) with a baby in her arms. They embraced and he walked away. she was crying. As the engine started the intensity of her tears increased. she continued her crying until the plane was in the air, There was nobody to care for me, nobody to cry of my leaving, nobody awaiting my return.

S2F-? I thought after I got out they replaced the S2E with the jet engine powered S3. Sorry I thought the E series was the last S2. We always had the "OLD" stuff on the East coast. Good to hear from you sailor-Anchors Away---Tee

Many stops along the way. San Diego to Hawaii seams like was like 13 or 14 hours. Then to Wake Island. I believe Guan then the PI. Very long flight. Stan
