Very Sad Accident

A local man was tragically killed recently while trying to get his vehicle unstuck. Apparently a good Samaritan was going to pull him out of the ditch but his hitch broke loose and propelled through the rear window and hit the poor fellow in the head. By all reports he was a terrific young guy of 33. The paper said they were using a tow strap which reminded me of the recent discussion on here about straps vs chains. I am not taking sides , I have personally had a broken chain kick back over the tailgate and just miss breaking the rear window, couple more links worth and it may have been me killed by it. Very sad for his family.

This is the kind of thing that has stopped me from being a good Samaritan in terms of pulling a vehicle out of a ditch or snow bank. Even when things do not go horribly bad like in your story something gets broke on the pulled vehicle. Then somebody is coming after you for damages. Everybody meant well in your story but now the good Samaritan will have the deceased's family coming after him in court.

Sad but true. The world we live in. Oh well.......

A fellow stopped to help someone broken down on one of the few bridges here in S. Cal. A car came along and knocked him off the bridge. He was just trying to help. Stan

A few years ago a teenager here in Tennessee was riding with his mom and they saw a woman with a flat on the side of the interstate. He asked his mom to stop and let him help the woman change her tire. A woman texting ran off the road and killed him. Very, very sad.

I can?t think of a better way I?d rather die than helping someone else, sure beats a hospital bed I?d think. It?s never fun when someone dies for the people who are left behind but we?ve all got to do it sooner or later

Also here in TN a motorist near me topped a hill and hit and killed 2 folks walking toward him apparently in the road. I wasn't there but I
have seen so many folks walking toward traffic (legal) but nowhere near the shoulder.

I think of this often. About a year ago this school had just won the state championship. There was two brother on the team. You know this had to make their parents so proud of them. Before the parents got home their mom, sister and uncle were killed in ahead on collison with a car passing a truck. Their dad is still in bad shape. So sad.

I agree. People need help and we can't let the lawyers keep us from helping those in need.

I was taught to never throw a line to a disabled boat---have them throw you a line--I believe it came from maritime law

(quoted from post at 04:09:05 03/02/19) A lot depends on whose tow strap it belonged to.

He said the hitch broke and went through the window and hit the guy. Sounds like the strap was tough enough. I see some pretty sketchy looking hitches in the parking lots.
