454 chevy irrigation pump engine

im curious, on these anybody have one? what do the exhaust manifolds look like? i ordered a set of plug wires for my winch truck with the mystery engine,they wont fit due to the exhaust manifolds, its a big block chevy, but what big block gets changed depending on who of the owners kids i talk to , these manifolds almost remind one of the old cummins log style manifolds, then they have a 3/8th piece that surrounds the plugs , making it have to use straight large silicone wire ends

Ive read a couple of your post about the "mystery engine" Did you actually find out what it actually is. Cause the more i read it sounds like a Tall Block Truck 427 engine .

The ones I saw in southwest Kansas had headers, some with the pipe sticking straight up and some with the pipe pointed toward the road. After driving by one of them at night with the windows down you were wide awake. Last time I was out there most of the irrigation engines still had headers but they had mufflers stuck on them. Mufflers take away the excitement.

A photo would be GREAT.

NOT sure what you mean by a "3/8" piece", but as Steve sez, the BBC's typically had 7 steel shields each attached to a manifold bolt that protected the spark plug boots.

(In medium truck applications, at least, "7" was typically left to fend for itself, without a heat shield.)

ill get some pics of the thing today when the sun comes up, its just odd for a truck,, ive worked on dozens of big block Chevy but this one is just subtle odd, the water pump is more forward than it should be, neither the 454 water hose, or the 350 hose [ what was originally in the truck] fit it, ive never seen these exhaust manifolds,in a truck ect

goint to try for 3 pics i hope somebody can recognize this, from the paint its obviously built from pieces, but note how close the water pump hose intake is to the belts, it should be back about where the fuel line is, also that blue/green color on the block, which makes me think this isn't a truck engine al all, and those exhaust manifolds anybody remember those? im just trying to figure out what ive got, it runs and pulls trailers really good, but some of that is those 4;56 gears just like belts, hoses and plug wires, when you get something for it, it wont work on this engine

Are those the block stamped numbers in the second pic? Looks like H123--, did you ever call a dealer with those numbers?

ericlb,

Those exhaust manifolds look very similar to the ones on my 1986 Chevy K20 truck, the difference is mine have the smog pump lines going to each cylinder. My truck is not original, it is an 1986 K20 frame and drive line (originally had a 350 with a carb) that has an 1987 R20 engine (TBI 454) transplanted in.

K20= 3/4 ton 4wd
R20= 3/4 ton 2wd

I would think you could go to your local auto parts store, or look online, and compare parts for a 1987 454 aka 7.4L engine to see if that is closer to what you need. One thing to note in 1987 the 454 could either have a carb or be TBI (throttle body injection), this may make a difference in some parts applications. You will definitely want the heat shields for the spark plugs/wires or they will get damaged from heat. I purchased mine through the local GM dealer, couldn't find any other source and they had to be ordered in an odd quantity. This was probably 15 years ago. I might still able to dig around and see if I could locate the part number, I might have one or two still in the package. Been so long I can't remember exactly how that project went down.

It would be interesting to see what the casting codes are on your engine, from the pad on the right front or the engine below the alternator and from the bell housing on the back of the block. Knowing what the original application was would help answer the questions you have.

Couple of pics from under the hood of my truck, exhaust manifolds from both sides. No pic of water pump, can't see much with the smog pump in place.

I don't understand why you are confused. Looks like a run of the mill tall deck BBC truck engine to me. ???????

chevy yes i did that with the whole number, H by itself doesnt come back for Chevy, now if the 1 is a I it is hi performance, but this 1 is clear and its a 1, however the dealer told me at one point gm stamped that tab with a partial vin number from the original vehicle, there is another number on the back of the block which will cross and id the engine, but the way this engine is mounted, i have 1 inch between the back of the engine and the trucks cab, and a mirror i have wont get a good enough angle to read the number,

its not, nothing for a 454 fits this engine, dont know if its because its a engine with parts from another on it, or if its a engine thats not out of a truck

belts dont fit hoses dont fit, the water pump intake in in the wrong spot, plug wires done have the right ends, on them, the fan shroud is probably off a tractor ect, this is obviously a big block chevy out of something, but i need to get it figured out the original story is that its out of a 69 corvette but to my knowledge no 1969 chevy anything had a blue green engine, and thats its original color, where it has color left

or differing applications, engines use different water pumps.
