I'm a tractor pulling rookie and I was wondering if anyone could give me information on the four forwards gears of a 1937 JD A.
I found the mph speed chart that shows first gear at 2.3 mph, second gear at 3.0 mph, third gear at 4.8 mph and fourth gear at 6.3 mph. My question is are the first through fourth gears corresponding to first gear (L1), second gear (L2), third gear (H1), and fourth gear (H2)? Somebody told me that second gear was H1 and third gear was L2?
Thanks for your time,
mike

Tractor pull tracks will make your tractor pull harder than anything in real field conditions.
So I'm thinking you will need your lowest gear , unless the engine was hopped up a lot.
You should be correct in the first through fourth gears corresponding to first gear (L1), second gear (L2), third gear (H1), and fourth gear (H2)

Most of the sanctioned events have a speed limit placed on the antique pullers. Exceed that limit and you are disqualified. 1st gear should keep you under that limit.

Hi, because you know the speeds can you not select each gear and
by that you should be able to tell by the speed the order that they go.ed

Just for the fun of it (that's what it is all about) I have pulled my stock '36 A a couple of times and always in first gear. It has enough power to spin out in first but I think it would power-out in second.

a lot depends on the track black top, dirt, clay, all pull different what weight class you pulling in .what size tires and what shape are they in . what draw bar height and the length all play a part . best is just go to a pull and start pulling and run some test. Keep records as to what you do and keep track of rear tire pressure after a pull or two you will know what gear . good luck

Yes, slow to fast. 1-l, 2-l, 1-h, 2-h. Been a lot of years since I pulled with my JD. "D" and Case "L". Get the draw bar up to max. allowed height. Go in 1st. gear. Weight it to
the max. for that weight class. Take several log chains along so when you weigh in if you need 10-20 lbs. more you can just throw a chain or two on the floor board.

37 A was geared a little fast. 1st gear might do it on a loose track but if it is a hard pulling one you might be in trouble with it.

The pull I have worked for the past 15+ years is strictly out of field type. Yours would be in 2 plow antique. We do not weigh but go acording to plow size. And first gear is what is required and no more than 2 factory weights per rear wheel and bolted on with bolts, no threaded rod sticking Drawbar set in high field working position, do not measure but can tell if it is bolted to factory spects. 10% over on RPM's. Always a good croud watching. Chains on platform would disqualify you same as the rod sticking out for weights or front weights or a bar in front of rear wheel for suitcase weights. And standing also disqualifies you.
