My 96 dodge 3500 front tires are getting to their end. I maybe put 4-500 miles a year. The truck only is used only to pull my mowing tractors 5-6 months. It is resting now during the winter. I was at a swap meet today, and saw a good set of used tires. The tires are Firestone, and about 5 years old. Think they will go another 5 years. Swap meet is still going on this Sat. Stan

I?d run em if they have decent tread I?ve never had a tire explode from going bad without giving some warning signs first a bad vibration or something

I would pass I will not mount a tire that's 5 years old just buy the cheapest new tire and move on with life... Warranting those cheap tires handle like chit....

If they are radial tires 5 years is pretty old. I was in a pinch last year and bought a used tire that had a lot of tread on it but it was about 6 years old. The first time I had it out I was going freeway speed pulling an empty 16' trailer and the tire blew. It was all I could do to keep control of the van to get it off the road. On the other hand I have tires I bought in 1998 on my jeep that are bias tires and I don't worry about them at all.

I've ran old tires all my life. problems are usually less then 1% or the same as new tire problems. i run them fast or slow, loaded or MT but do agree, the more sun they see, is proly a tell tail sign!

used tires
let me welcome you to vermont
each year people have all their tires replaced TWICE
once when snow is impending
and again as snow seems gone
what they do with the perfectly good tires is up to them
the summer tires/The winter tires/the summer tires/The winter tires the summer tires/The winter tires?
some get put in the garage some get the basement for some the car (or truck) gets sold
the state is a flood with used tire ads

not one ad states anything about age
they are bought and sold like eggs at a farmers market
black round used tires

date code paranoids watch way too much TV

I would look at the side walls for cracking shows up more if ther blown up on rim. If that's the case pass on them. I also look at it as ou need a few spares. The get you home one or get by till spring.

For years unless I could not find that used tire I have not bought new. And I don't think even tire shops know how to date them for age.

I think we all forget that we drive on used tires every day of the year with our cars and trucks. Even our trailers roll on used tires. And every used vehicle you buy usually has used tires on it. Buying used ones is OK I would say as long as you know a bit about what you're buying (which wouldn't include me). Just sayin' .....

I put 151,000 miles on my Dodge dually and never bought a new tire for it...just placed an ad or watched for take-offs on craigslist. Most came with rims and simulators, so I was able to re-sell them for what I paid for all. I ran used 10 ply truck tires on my trailers and had better luck with them than the ST rated tires from the factory.

Stan also I take into consideration what I am doing. Driving interstate all day at 80 plus mph or jigging around the farm doing odd farm tasks.

I have had two sets of tires go bad this year, both less than 5 years old. Look for take offs(Craigslist) that is the only used tires I would put on any highway car or truck.

I will not even do the way to high 70 limit on the highways even let alone the 80. I stay off those raceways.

No gurantee new tires will last either. This was on a Plymouth car. Had new tires put on and Wife headed to her parents home 12 mile away. She did not get halfway till one blew. She was setting trying to figure what to do when a tollback wrecker came along. Driver tried to put spair on for her but lugs were tightened way to bad for him to be able to get off. Ended up he took her and car back to tire dealer. That new tire did not have 10 mile on it when it blew so you cannot depend on new being any safer than a used one.
