Who can repair an old school voltage regulator?

I have a Ford 4000 4 cylinder with a 12 volt system. I have never found a voltage regulator that would hold up even a year. I bought a new old stock Fomoco regulator on Ebay, but it does not seem to work. I have looked for someone to check/fix this regulator, but cannot find anyone. Does anyone have any idea who I can send this regulator to? I want to keep my tractor original, so no alternators.

You can send your reg and also your gen here:

Each gen puts out slightly different voltage. The reg can be matched to the generator. They will either repair your reg, or will sell you a new American made one, and match the output to your gen. Sometimes it's the gen not putting out enough voltage, or putting out a varying voltage that damages the regulator.

I had them do my Ford 8N reg and gen together and have had no trouble since.

Check the archives, there's been some post in the past about where to buy solid-state voltage regulators for legacy generator systems.

That would allow you to keep the "correct" generator and make the charging system reliable.

docmirror, I think you nailed it.

A successful generator/regulator marriage requires complete compatibility with each other.

The original regulator was matched exactly to the generator, but it's long gone. Even the brand name regulators are "fit all" applications, no way they could offer exact replacements, the list would be extensive.

Also there could be a problem with the generator. There is a specification for the field amp draw. That needs to be mentioned to the rebuild shop. If the field is drawing too much amperage, it will arc the contacts quickly, shortening the life of the regulator.

And then there is the wiring. Check the wire harness carefully. Shorts, bad connections, if there is an amp meter, those are a common area of hidden high resistance connections.

And finally, if you just can't find a solution, there are alternators hidden inside a generator case. Keeps the original look but provides the dependability of an alternator.
