OT ford escape turbo

Hello
i do try to avoid off topic items but there are so many here with some tech knowledge its a good place to ask

daughter and future SIL are looking at Ford Escapes in the 2015-17 model year range. Many are turbo-charged. Generally in theory I think turbos are a good thing, add lots of power without much if any hit to fuel mileage. HOWEVER, i don't like them because of the added complexity and more things to go wrong and the high cost to fix.

ANyone here have a 2013-2018 Ford Escape with turbo that they've got some mileage and history on to give some thoughts and feedback on reliability?

I know these things are WAY more complicated than a turbo you might find on a Oliver 1850 with a Perkins diesel (at least a little tractor content)

Thanks.

Turbo's seem to be all the rage now. From past knowledge of cars that had them you could always expect the head gaskets to give out on them way before the non turbo similar versions would. So for that reason alone I'm Leary of them. If they must have one make sure they have an extended warranty that covers those parts.

wife has a 2013 Titanium with about 80,000 miles on it, maintained by the book as far as oil changes, never had
engine issues, hers is a 2.0, little sucker will flat fly if you want it to. Can't say I'm real impressed with the mileage, most always about 20-22 mpg, had hoped for better.

We have a 2014 escape titanium, 2.0 turbo. It is very fast and very fun. 75,000 miles and no issues yet. I change the oil every 5,000 with mobile 1. The dash reads average fuel mileage at 25mpg or so.

I have a 2013 with 187,000 miles on it. The motor seems to be a good one. I wish I could say that about the front end suspension, rotors and brakes. Mine is all wheel drive.

My wife had a new 2013 with the 2.0 traded at 90k with no issues. She biught a new 2017 with the 2.0. Just turned 40k with no issues. Average 24-25 mpg

Have a '16 & we really like it. Bought it for a knock around and it has exceeded our expectations. Quiet inside and very peppy!

Turbo's. Zoom zoom, go fast, maybe.
Rule number one, There is no replacement for displacement. Bigger engine, go faster.
Rule number two, Gears for go! Wanna go faster? Add gears.
Yesterday cars were bigger and bigger engine. Emissions came to town and engines got smaller and smaller.
Fuel mileage came to town and engines got smaller again.
Then the price tags started to climb with turbos.
Now the transmissions are 10 speeds to keep up with the older muscle cars.
The smaller cars are adding more gears and turbos just to keep up.
Turbos and superchargers all force air into the engine.
When you force a piston down, you increase the wear on the cylinder.
Increased wear can account for a shorter engine life and engine life can be extended,
with more frequent oil changes that most people don't do.
Wanna build a real zoom zoom engine?
12 cylinders because after that that, it becomes redundant.
5 valves per cylinder. 3 intake, two exhaust.
Turbos are cheaper than superchargers but generate more heat.
Turbo's I believe generate less power than the supercharger, but it has been far, far too long since I looked into it.
Once you get that 500+ CID engine built, add that modern 10+ speed trans and about a 2.90 rear end and you could probably hit 300 MPH.
Just remember the speed limit in the neighborhood is still around 25 MPH.
Your mileage may differ.

Back in 1983 I bought a 80 hp Allis Chalmers, has a 200 cu. 4 cyl with a turbo and intercooler. Its been set at over 100 hp. Since then. Still going two clutches. New top trans shaft. Waterpump, 4 or 5 alternators, 3 or 4 compressors, New tires, diesel pump, etc. But no turbo.

thanks for the feedback

looks like, depending on the year you can only get the non turbo 2.5 in the base S model.

I think they found an SE turbo that is Ford certified which gives alot more warranty so maybe they will go that direction.

surprisingly 2017 escapes with 13000ish miles, certified for around $15,500. couldn't touch a Jeep Cherokee (not Grand) like that for 17000 we've got a cherokee and have been really happy with it. i would buy a 2nd one but would probably get the V6. they just added a 2.0 turbo option for an extra $1500 but you only gain a little torque and about 1MPG over the V6. hard to justify the extra $.
