Any of you participate in a historical society

Your town, county or such? They seem to be declining and less interest among people. I am involved in one to a pretty good extent. Dealt with a couple others to lesser degree. I have had a chance to write some articles for the newsletter which was kind of fun. Some have included genealogy stuff and that brings in people.

My dad donated to the local town historical society, I am going through my collectables and doing the same, but no interest to belong.

Jocco, I certainly do not want to step on yours or anyone else's toes, but historical society is kind of a 4 letter word in my neck of the woods. The only thing the historical group in my area wants to do it tell people what they can and can't do with their property, and try to get everything put in a historical district so that there can be no development or new business or industry come into the county. They recently tried to put over 5000 acres of private land into a historical district that really had not historical significance. They thought they could stop a natural gas pipeline by doing this. If the landowners hadn't stood up they would have gotten it done. I live in a county of 13,000 people with very few businesses and very little industry. Tax rates are climbing much faster than the population. The historical group wants our county to be the same as it was in 1863 when we became a state. They want zero growth. The historical group fought with the county commission for nearly a year over the appropriate roof to put on the courthouse. I am a member of the county planning commission and everything we do is scrutinized by the historical group. Don't get me wrong, I love history, old buildings and statues, especially the Confederate ones that everyone is trying to destroy, but common sense has to prevail.

Cowboy, I think we live close together. I am a charter member of the Bollinger County Historical Society and also a member of the Madison County Historical Society. Also a member of the American Legion post in your town. I suppose you know that the American Legion Post 158 sponsors thee Jackson Homecomers.

Nothing like that they do save stuff put up signs at historic places. Save old graveyards from delapitation. Put on a few educational classes for groups schools.

a lot of government places in Missouri are giving a lot of the old information to these places. takes up to much time for them when some ones goes in there to find some information when doing research. I think that's a great deal for people who are hunting facts of there ancestors. my dad and his brothers and sisters all started school in a one room school house. I was able to find some of there school report cards from back in the 30s. real neat. Missouri is one state that you can find a lot of information. some states like Colorado are terrible. the one I belong to do a lot of grave yard stone repairing. the rent a building and operate off of donations. I have traced my first ancestor to the us in 1737. He is know as a pioneer in north Carolina as stated by the stone placed there by the state of north Carolina. very interesting subject to some but not all people.

The Confederate monument removal just ain't right. They are a big part of American history. It is much akin to removing a plaque at Plymouth Rock saying that Quakers weren't citizens and should not be honored. P.S. I'm a Canadian !

Moonlite37, I don't know if we have ever met but I live in the Starlite area west of Jackson. My father-in-law was from Patton area and had lots of kin in Madison Cty. He was a Brotherton.

I?m a member of our cities historical society as well as a member of a county historical society in the county north of the one I reside in. Also a member of The Sons of Confederate Veterans, member of a geneolgy society and would be a member of The Sons of the American Revolution if we had a local chapter, been thinking about starting one but I?m involved in too much as it is...

(quoted from post at 21:06:23 02/20/19) Someday, the people who removed the statues will be gone and forgotten. The historical people never will be.

I am a Yankee but I see the removal of statues of confederate generals as a great shame. They may have pledged loyalty to their country, but they couldn't very well desert their homeland. They were simply leaders in their profession, with most of them ignoring the politics. There were of course notable exceptions.

not a member of our local one and refuse to participate or even look at what they have. they are not pro community in any way at all and just want to be another good old boy local club of which we already have 2.

i think there is a need and place for historical clubs especially in today's climate of win at all cost including lying cheating and stealing and part of the lying is re-writing history (yes there is a political group and their media cohorts i'm implying here) with everyone being so tech centered and getting almost all their information (including in schools) from the internet having local, county and state historical societies and museums ect are important

"those that fail to remember history are condemned to repeat it".

Geauga County Historical Society. We're not active members but attend some events at the Century Village in Burton, OH. It seems to be growing and the annual Historical Engine Society show is more crowded each year.

I'm a 12 year member of our Bd of Directors, Douglas Cty MN His Soc (Alexandria area) to include a historic Lutheran Church. Very Scandinavian area, with a few loose Krauts thrown in. Lots of fun, but again like mentioned, declining interest. People my age (75) that remember our Great Grandparents that homesteaded their farms in the 1870s are passing on. My kids, barely remember my parents, let alone that older era..........

my daughter does enough for me and her, she is in charge of displays at the museums in Lincoln NM, [ the actual town where billy the kid and his boys fought in 1880] also ft Stanton NM, which has a huge history starting with the Indian wars, and Calvary, buffalo soldiers, wwll prison camp for captured Germans, a tubercular hospital, and lots more all took place there

I belong to our towns historical/museum association. I joined as much to keep it going as for my interest in things historical. Seems no one wants to involve themselves in civic organizations anymore, and yet people complain when those civic organizations die out and the events they put on disappear. I'm not "from here" and I don't have a lot of local history interests, but I find enough interesting things to stay a member.

If it wasn't for our 2 churches and our historical assoc, there wouldn't be a thing happening in this town. I couldn't even get people interested in helping to erect a town Christmas tree!
