1955 Ford 640

(quoted from post at 14:38:21 02/21/19) I am assuming based on your fit recommendation that there won?t be an issue hp rating wise for the 5 foot rotary cutter?

A Ford 640 develops about 30-ish PTO horsepower (31 in Nebraska test). Just keep that in mind when you are shopping.

I can't remember if the 640 has live PTO or transmission driven PTO, so an overrunning clutch between the PTO shaft and the bush hog might be advisable for safety sake!!

It'll run a five footer all day long in most conditions. In really thick stuff, gear down and take a narrower swath. I run a 6 footer with a 38 hp MF 50.

As has been said, various brands available and 5' is as big as I would put behind it. I'm sure you will have somebody say they pulled a 6'to 10' with no problem but truth is, a 5' is as big as you want on a 640.

Your 640 does not have live PTB but does have live hydraulic. It has adequate power to handle a 6 ft. Woods it you keep the blades from digging into the ground. A 6ft is quite a bit higher priced than a 5 ft. but is far better.

Not at all. Remember, it has to be properly adjusted to the tractor, good blades, new or sharp and also consider the conditions you will cut in. Younger growth vs later summer growth of weeds and such + height and density of whatever you need to cut all come into play here. I'd rather cut once in June and later than wait til late August or September when it's thick stalk and tall.

Cutting tall mature grasses, uphill, at full depth will certainly bog a tractor like this down a little, many variables, but that does not make a 5'-0" rotary cutter the wrong size for this tractor. I have a '54 640 in nice shape, but have never cut with it. I ran an 850 with a 6'-0" mower for 14 seasons, more HP and tractor, but the same thing applies.

I had a 5’ with mine and it did just fine. Borrowed neighbor’s 6’ once and it seemed like quite a load for the tractor. I was much more comfortable with the 5’.
