John Deere 4310

My neighbor has a John Deere 4310 tractor which is 4 wheel drive. While driving down the road yesterday he came to an abrupt stop in front of my driveway. The front axle was locked up. The axle has a dipstick and it was dry. What will be involved to repair this? Can this be done by an individual or does the dealer need to be involved? Are used axles available?

Dry gear box failure can be as simple as replacing a bearing, or finding the entire ring and pinion as well as spider gears and bearings all toast. The worst is if a primary casting has been ruined by a spun outer race. Prepare for a great expense. Hope for a single bearing failure (not likely). I assume he/she was not running it in 4X4 mode on the road!! Jim
