hydraulic cylinder length

I am confused on how they designate or measure hydraulic cylinders. Is it the length of the stroke or the length of the outside barrel?

Usually both are specified. Different types of cylinder connections cause different stroke lengths for a given size (pin to pin center line (if it has pins, some have tubes at both ends, some a tube at one end and a stick at the other, some used for 3rd member are threaded with the top link type coupling at both ends) fully extended, cylinder.

A disk or a field cultivator with usually take an 8 inch stroke cylinder and that gives a 20 1/4 inch retracted length . It?s better to go shorter than to long or you will bend the rod if you have a tractor with good hydraulic pressure
