Do storms have names?

Are winter storms, like hurricanes, given a name, and if so, since when? I was reading a news article and it said that winter storm Petra has arrived.

Only according to the Weather Channel. The National Weather Service still only names tropical storms and hurricanes. It's stupid and only good for getting more advertising money and people to watch.

I don't know if it's really a name, but, I have been calling all this snow and ice "something"!

"Entities from the United States government which includes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Weather Service (NWS) have also weighed in stating that they would not be naming winter storms, and have asked others to refrain from doing so."

Channel 214 and 215 on Dish Satellite are both national weather stations and cover the country in depth. They refer frequently to storms by names. Kinda confusing as seems every day they are mentioning another name.......who? What happened to ..........?

215 folks stay indoors and talk about it. 214 has the nuts that go out in hurricanes and see if they can get blown over, frozen tundra and see if they get frost bite, coastal swamps and see if they can swim......crazy, plum crazy.

I agree with you. Weather people have gone far beyond hyping the weather. They have such boring things to tell us that they can?t stop the silliness of making it seem worse than ever or more exciting than ever. Weather is repetitious and mundane. If they would just improve their accuracy.
