john deere 1010 gas rowcropper

Hi folks , i have my Dads 1962 jd 1010 gas tractor with a Wico dist , any way she wont go of late keeps backfiring , am thinking timing , but we noticed that there are only 2 lobes on dist shaft and it is a 4 cylinder so are Wico dist different ? or are they just worn down . Point of note when i was a lad watching day I can just remember the 2 lobes when he was changing points ? Any help would be greatly appreciated . Yours in Deere , Peter

the original was a Delco distributor that fit several 4 cylinder XX10 series tractors. It should have 4 lobes. Jim

The "1010" used (interchangeably), a WICO, or a Prestolite or a Delco distributor and AFAIK they all would have 4-lobe points cams.

The distributor cam and rotor turn together, so a 2-lobe cam would not "play nice" with a 4-cylinder engine with a 5-nipple distributor cap.

Likely, at some point in the past, someone swapped internal parts with a distributor for some other application.

Or, POSSIBLY a complete distributor minus the cap from a 2-cylinder "420" or "430" has been installed. (NOT absolutely sure this is possible, but it well may be.)

In any case, I'm 99.9% sure your distributor cam needs to have 4 lobes!
