Workinig on cars

I got talked in to buying a person Willy's Jeep one day. Brought it home and started work on it realizing I heard stories why there son was not driving it. They bought it for one reason to teach there son who to work on cars and service them. Threw this past week I have found so munch stuff that is wrong with it not even I would be driving this. This poor Jeep is a good example of a person who is just learning how to work on cars. Does not complete a job and in yet tries hard to do it but still does it wrong. Threw the years I have got spoiled I have to admit it. I am use to a catalog of parts to look at and calling a company that is a real company not one of these companies that are only on line computer. Cars VS tractors I like to say tractors are harder to work on but locating parts are easy to do compared to this Willy's Jeep. So far I have called three companies to order parts for this jeep found out they only do business on a computer buying system. I may be old fashion but no thanks. Computer is to risky and cold to do business on I feel.

Was the young fella supposedly "finished" with his repairs? What sorts of things are you referring to? Fill in the blanks with your repair story Brent.

Meanwhile, stay with phone ordering if you insist but on-line purchasing from reputable vendors is done every second of the day. I was like you once but learned that there are easier, faster, and better ways to buy things than over the phone and sometimes over the counter.

I am a Willis CJ3b owner and fixer. They are just out of reach for some local parts. and very much fixable from sources on the net. The source below has body and suspension parts. Many other sources are available. You can actually call most of them and talk to a real person. Jim

Best of luck with your project. You are correct that purchasing parts for a project like that without the benefit of the internet will be very difficult.

Kaiser Willies has most every part for old jeeps and you can get a catalog from them. As mentioned JC whitney has some, Beachwood Canvas also sells jeep parts. You can get basics at NAPA or auto parts stores, IF and a very big IF it is stock now

As others have stated.....Kaiser Willys has a great catalog.....I use it as a reference book....almost like a repair manual. Also, I always have decent luck at NAPA. Another great source is www.ewillys.com. A great guy....David Eilers runs the sight and has lots of good info and advertisers on the website.

I have a 1953 CJ3B in pretty original condition. I also have a few used parts and pieces laying around. Have fun.

You should consider yourself lucky that parts are available for a 40 or 50 year old jeep anywhere.

You remind me of the boy who was in our shop a couple weeks ago. He had already found the part for his '70 model Wheel Horse online, but didn't want to wait to get it.
If you rember back BC (Before Computers) you probably remember waiting a week or more for stuff to come from SEARS.

Looks like you could perform surgery in your shop. Very clean. What's going on with the floor--trying to figure out the lines. Seem too big for expansion joints. Just a concrete floor with big lines?

Sorry, don't know much about Jeeps, never had any interest. Local auto parts store helps with my parts needs. For the tractor--well, it's learned to do without.

You might try these guys. I bought a fair amount of stuff from them when I worked on a CJ3A for a fella a few years back. They were only 10 miles from me, so I'd just drive down and pick the stuff up. Website says they are discontinuing most parts and selling at a substantial discount. You may be able to get some deals if they have what you need.
try this

I had a customer bring his dads Jeep.He said he got in it and the brakes were so bad he wouldn t let his dad drive it till it was fixed. Dad had been messing with it for years(he was in his 80s when I got the Jeep to fix)Shoes on backwards, wheel cylinders leaking and some frozen. I rebuilt everything and "Dad" said it never stopped so good. Those jobs make you smile at the end of the day.
