Skin cancer

I have had things frozen with nitrogen on my skin several times in the past to remove any possible skin cancer from starting. Today I had a melanoma skin cancer cut out of my neck, before it spread to something else. Too much California sun, and not enough sun block, I guess is the cause. Another reason may be my Norwegin fair skin heritage. Who knows. My JD has a nice top to keep sun of me. My other tractors I am hanging out in the open sun. If I wear a large hat, I can't wear my ear protection. It's a good idea to get a skin check also. Stan

Hopefully they got you all fixed up Chief. I'm sure there's places that are hard to see that people don't notice any changes. I guess that's what a good wife is for? Checking for lumps, bumps, and abnormalities in places not normally visible?

I wish you the best. That's the bad one. Yes the sun is hard on us over the years but it isn't all the cause of melanoma. Back years ago when I was taking the better half to Duke to be treated for it I saw infants and toddlers with it too.

Burning and slicing has become a part of my life. First dermatologist I went to about 40 years ago called it "Fair Haired Farmboy Syndrome".

I assume you use ear muff type hearing protection. The obvious solution is earplugs, of course, but you can get earmuffs with the connecting bar that goes around the back of your head instead of over the top, so you can still wear a hat. They have a velcro strap that goes over the top to hold them up.

A friend has been having a bunch removed the last couple years. Worst was his ear, big chuck of cartilage removed, very painful.

yep.. I had a 2" circle cut out of the top of my head in Oct. Malignant melanoma. That hurt a bit and I still have ghost pain from the nerves going back together. Makes all the little one and the freezes seem like nothing. My doc says "cover up but keep having checkups".

When I bought my first cab tractor I told my wife "you don't want me to get skin cancer do you?" I think that it is sad that many people think that skin cancer means simply having a few spots frozen and done. They don't know that it can travel inside and kill you. Sad.

Good luck with the treatments ... I have read and heard that most of that damage is done years ago when a person is a young kid and shows up later in life, not sure if that is accurate or not. I guess most of us got way too much sun back in the day and remember some scorching sunburns. Living in California wouldn't help things I don't think.

I went to a dermatologist several times to have all of that stuff frozen off the tops of my ears. He'd just come in with a thermos of nitrogen and a long Q tip. He'd check me all over to make sure it hadn't spread. I wised up and found out that wart remover stuff is the same thing. If I have something that doesn't look quite right or itches too long,I freeze it off myself or have my wife do it if I can't reach it. So far so good.

I had a big chunk cut off of one ear 15 years ago, and many small spots frozen. I have something inside my ear now that I'm going to get looked at in 2 weeks. A good friend waited too long and had to have radiation treatments! Now I wear big hats!
