NH 519 manure spreader

Any thoughts on that model, pro or con? I've got an old spreader of indeterminate make that I have been cobbling on for years. Put a new bottom chain in about 15 years ago- links have started breaking again (shovel it out each time- ugh), and the side boards need replaced. Bushings on the drive chains are very sloppy. No immediate indication that SWMBO is going to get rid of the horses during my lifetime, so its time to upgrade.

Found a 519 for $2,000, supposed to be in good shape. Floor looks good in the pics, and the main thing I like is the bottom chain is not the old square links that wear out sliding on the floor boards, but are like a bicycle chain and bottom wear doesn't weaken them. Some on other boards have said watch out for the axle- poor design that collects manure and rots out.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Pay very close attention to the axle cross member on those series spreaders. They look substantial but are basically formed sheet metal and are prone to failure from corrosion.

Problem with the NH axle is that it is formed steel, in a U-shape...and water leaks through the boards to the inside of the U, and rots the steel., so the wheels tip inward. My local blacksmith has rebuilt untold number of them.

Another vote for poor axels. Poorest design of any spreader around. Like others have said, its u shaped out of pressed steel with the top of the u up, so it catches and holds all that high acid juice. Usually with NH equipment you can buy sight unseen and it will work good for you. Bought a nice one a few years back and hauled about 6 loads with it and the axle broke. Tipped it over with the loader and rebuilt it.

I have an older NH spreader that I beleive is a model 51X. Sounds like spreaders in that series all had the stupid axle design. I guess I am lucky, my wheels dont lean in yet so i suppose the axle still has some life left. What does one do? Drill holes in the bottom to let moisture drain out?

New Idea used the same set up. We never had the axles rust out or break. The bolt would wear so that the axle shaft would work end ways.
