Hello all ,

I picked up a 270 recently . Motor will not turn over , been sitting for 10 or so years .

It was my uncles and he said she ran just fine when he parked it years ago .

My plan is to pull injectors and fill cyLs. with ATF . If that doesnt free anything up ill pull pan and bearing caps yada yada yada .

These injectors are in there pretty good , any ideas gentlemen ?

Not too sure about the 270 but I have a similar engine in my 4/65. The injectors fit in a copper sleeve in the head which may pull out as you pull them out. This will allow coolant straight into the cylinders. You will also need a spreader tool to get the sleeves back in and watertight.

While we are on the subject of Leyland, anyone know of a source for a running 4/98 Leyland diesel engine (same one used in the 270) here in the US? I'd look offshore but to my understanding getting a running one through customs because of the EPA has become difficult.

Thanks

Rick

A couple of places here in central WI.
Used to do lots of Leyland stuff at Bakers Garage in Dorchester WI, don't know if he's still in it or not. (715) 654-5275
And this guy over north of Merrill http://northwoodstractor.com/ seems to do a bit with them.

Talked to a guy last year, can't remember the company name, tractor yard, guy said they had a couple of 270's in but had no knowledge if they ran or not. I'm check those places. Thanks.

You can almost bet the injection pump is stuck also. Some had the Simms, others the CAV. I have a Cav on the bench today off a Leyland. Don't see many of these. It has a driveshaft that is splined into the timing gear. David Brown and Leyland are the only CAV pumps I know of driven with a internal driveshaft. Al

Some early 6.354 Perkins and the 4.108 Perkins had the quill drive shaft. I have a TO-35 Ferguson with the Standard 23C engine that has the quill drive shaft/hub setup also.

I'm still working on a 384 in similar condition or worse. Interchangeable engine with similarty to 270. About 17 years ago it stopped running because they ran Simms diesel pump uot of oil and plungers seized but they couldn't figure it out and took off head and injector lines and sold it to me for parts for my 384 and 272.I used some parts and left it outside.Recently slid it inside (braked were rusted)and realized head and manifolds had allowed water in and 3 pistons were rusted solid. Three weeks of Blaster ,ATF ,pounding with wood blocks and pushing thin hachsaw pieces down along pistons finally loosened all three . Took all 4 out and cleaned up ,replacing 4 broken rings, and rehoned cylinder liners.Engine is difficult to work on from bottom because oil pump and 2 balance shafts are under crank. The injectors loosened up by wiggling with hex wrench while prying up and didn't seem to loosen sleeves but I'm not sure the rebuilts will seal . Some of the 4/98 engines are slightly different in sleeves offered and have a o-ring listed. Northwoods tractor is best source I know of for parts and info.
