What am I missing?

Every where I go I see people looking at their phones. Even when the family gathers at my house, most of them are looking at their phones. Do they have that many friends to talk to. Maybe, it's like looking here on the tractor sight, to see who is posting, and any problems they may have. Then that doesn't take long. Are any of you glued to your phones, I pads or whatever? Stan

just watch how many people have a phone in one hand all the time , or there say at a concert or event filming it while there right there not taking it in live , its a mystery to me how disconnected people have become

I spend way to much time on my phone checking on the yt, craigslist and Facebook. I have many oliver groups and truck sights on Facebook I watch.
The nice thing is ones I follow are automatically loaded to my page so I dont have to flip through a bunch of groups. I even saw a yt ad the other day.

I got rid of Facebook to much negative and to many
good deals to spend money I don?t have but I just
can?t stand the negativity on there . Getting to be
some of that here to but not to bad . I spend most of
my free time on here

Go out to eat and see a table full of people setting there not talking but all on their "Smart" phones. One reason I refuse to get one. I waste enough time on my Desk top PC. Let along having one to carry around.

Yeah I carry mine with me most of the time - but I'm not on it unless someone calls - or texts; mainly for my kids.

Phones etc are like anything else, they are a thing. The thing itself is not good or evil, it is YOUR OWN decision as to how you use it. 100 plus years ago the ?evils? of the day were cars and electricity.

I get 300 minutes a month(minimum I can get) for $15 and rarely use over 10 minutes. When I dispatched concrete I was constantly on the phone with customers and other I had enough of it
to last a life time.(LOL)

I don't have one,but using them all the time is an addiction, simple as that. Just like having to light up a cigarette.

(quoted from post at 02:55:15 02/18/19) I must be in the minority, if I'm talking to someone and the cell rings, I let it go to voicemail and will check it later..

I'm with you Dieseltech. When someone I'm with, and the phone rings they ask why are you not answering your phone. I say "I'm talking with you".

(quoted from post at 21:46:50 02/17/19) Well I agree with you. but if I tried that at a family function- no one would come.
f they just hang on the phone they are not really there any way so nothing lost.

Have you lost anything? My daughter got mad at me for kicking one of the bum siblings out so nobody comes over for the holidays (or any other time expecting a handout) any more......Hoorah. My sweetie and I have the best times on holidays, just the two of us!!!!!!!! She doesn't know it but she did me a grand favor.

I think that there is a kind of a vicious circle involved. People that don't have much to talk about and are not very outgoing will tend to "retreat" to their 'phone. People that retreat to their phone for any amount of time tend to not get involved in many activities. People who don't get involved in activities tend to not have much to talk about so they tend to retreat to their 'phones.

I do not think you are missing much. I work in a hi-tech business and I am the only one that does not have a cell phone/ Most people I know cannot afford them and/or use it as a pacifier. I lead several organizations and have run a township and survived without one. My attitude is they can call and leave a message. Yes there are times I wished I had one especially when traveling for work as I would like to call home at times.

A lot of good comments and opinions. My two 1, I'm glad there's at least 2 others out there besides myself that ain't got a cell phone, 2, cell phones are killing the art of conversation. That could probably be proven in any break room in any company anytime of day. I always appreciated my friend John who was needed by people in his business all the time. When that phone would ring he'd glance at it and either shut it off or apologize to me because he had to take it. Preacher friend of mine called phones the "3rd party conversation interrupter ". I guess that's 4 ain't it.

My issues are the ones that only do texting. They can't seem to communicate in person or on the phone. And the ones who can't put it down at all like others said.

I have spare tires in all my vehicles. I also have a cell phone. I use them all for the same purpose and with equal frequency.

(Sort of funny story about my cell phone: It's an ancient used one I bought off that online auction site for $15. The memory wasn't cleared by the previous owner, and I can't clear it without a password, so now I have a phone that has its memory simply loaded with what I can only assume are phone numbers of teenage girls with names like Tiffany and Lexie and Brandi. Or, wait ... maybe it was owned by a pimp.)

Always had to carry a phone for work, provided by the company so I am use to carrying one now. If I am talking with someone my phone is on mute and most the time I let the call go to voicemail and return the call later. When I was working I had to monitor it 24/7?s. Now it?s just something else to carry, not so many calls anymore.

I carry a cell phone with the ringer shut off 99 percent of the time. When got a lot of cloth on doing chores don't stop and dig it out. Will check it when I get back to house. Makes wife mad.

I have only an old style flip phone. I use it only to make outgoing calls. Has saved me a lot of time and steps. I probably don't average more than 5 minutes a month!

Me also. My flip phone goes with me when I leave the yard, otherwise it lays on the kitchen table. It MAY get used a couple times a month.
I'm with JD Seller 100% on this one. I have no desire for a smart phone because I see too many people who can't seem to exist without having their nose buried in it. I don't want to be one of those people!

Cool Hand ..... exactly the way I do it with my flip phone, only used for making calls or when I expect a call like picking someone up at the airport and I park down the road and turn it on, they call me and then swing by and pick them up outside. My grand kids laugh at it, especially since I have the phone number tagged on it with a sticker, I really don't use the number and have never learned it although I know it starts with 587. Ten bucks per month and way more calls or minutes than I'll ever use. I can bank the minutes & calls but no matter what I do, I still have to pay the ten bucks to keep current and registered.

I gave in a year and a half ago and my wife and I bought a set. Our monthly bill went over $100 per month when we made the jump. Now our 12 year old daughter has a third one on the plan, so another $15 per month. She has some very strict requirements to keep it, and she's not allowed to have it in her room after 8pm.

They are very convenient and useful, but are also definitely addicting. What happened on that forum? I'll check. Not much. How about now? Check again. Still not much. How about now? repeat ad infinitum.

If you sit down at the table for supper at our place;

Don't bring your phone if you want to eat.

If it is nearby and rings or buzzes don't even think about going to answer it.

Won't even answer our landline during supper.

No different than trying to come to the table with a hat on.

If you want to eat at our table get rid of it.

Ride a plane and the second it touches down bells and beeping is all you hear,I see couples out together sitting at a restaurant table looking at their phones, I have seen young children with them trying to talk to their Mama or their Daddy but no luck, too busy looking at their phones. I am pretty sure that if the technology was available 42 years ago and I had taken my future Wife on a date and stared at my phone that she would have left and called a cab and never answered another call from me, as would serve anyone right who does it. I can't believe the rudeness of some people, no way are they that much in demand that they have to spend every waking moment talking or texting. The technology and internet are tools, there is a lot of business to be conducted with a smart phone or tablet but there is a whole lot more facebook posting and checking going on as well, what could be more boring than reading someones every move and what type of ego does it take to think anyone cares to start with.

I have a flip phone and use it about 3-4 hours per year....Its seldom on and I only have it with me when traveling..

My smart phone is a real tool for me. I look up parts after I wipe the grease off my hands, I send text pics of parts, part numbers and serial number tags to the dealer parts man. Sometimes i can get a better view of a serial number tag by using a flashlight and the cell phone camera than I can with my own eyes.

I do a fair share of texting but the only person I conversational text to is my sis and those texts are short. Most of the texts to my sis are messages telling her how dad is doing. I can quietly send it off from his room in the nursing home without bothering dad and I won't be bothering her with a call. If I just want to send a short message or confirmation that I will be there and I'm not driving I shoot off a short text. If I am driving, no texting period. The last short text I sent off was to a friend who was feeling sick after having gall bladder surgery. I didn't want to bother him with a call so I sent off a get well text to let him know i'm thinking of him. The one nice thing about a text is I can re-read a text I have received to clarify it or the receiver of my text can re-read the figures I have given him if he or she needs to.

I keep an extensive electronic note book on the phone though I do not store personal information. some of the information I don't want to lose goes to the cloud so if the phone lays down and dies or is lost I still have that information available. Yes the phone bill costs me more than some people pay but for me the price is worth it.

I don't use mine a lot. When I am at work I like to keep it in the car. But in cold weather it does not seem to work So I bring it inside and leave it in my coat with ringer on low.
Very handy to have though. I wish I'd of got one years ago if for no other reason than to call the wife while we are in the store and ask her where she disappeared to ? Could of saved a lot of arguments if I had.

I own one. I rarely use it. It is a rule I must have it on me when working alone out on the place. I also forward my office line to it so clients can reach me when I am out and about. It's a tool. If it is an addiction to someone then that person should probably not drink or play cards or anything else that might get out of control. Weak people with weak minds who cannot control themselves taking it too far and ruining a good thing.

One of the handy things I do with my phone - I have all my serial numbers stored on my phone so when I'm looking up parts, etc. I have my numbers right there for the parts man. Saves a lot of time. Also pictures when I'm taking something apart sometimes helps in putting it back together, especially if some time has elapsed between the two procedures. However if I were to score the love/hate relationship I have with my phone, I think hate would win.

I'm Retired...

I sometimes accepted Job Challenges, that afford me the luxury of checking off another topic in the bucket list out side of the North American Continent. If the cell phone has a message for me ...my wife shall let me know when and only when we are back at our residence!

I do not own a cell phone (my wife does). Under no circumstance,do we have the cell phone turned on if we are out side our residence.!

Each to their own.....we live in a Nation of freedoms......they way I like it. Each to their own.

When you are a kid in order to be cool you have to be up on technology. The you are an old phart YTer you have to disdain technology to be cool. My 'phone belongs to my work. Every Sunday AM it tells that I averaged just over one hour per day on it. I am not on Facebook, and I don't browse the web. I look at weather and I text some and it is our Fire Dept. main means of communication. I Am Responding. com. People at work communicate mainly by text.

I suppose manning up and admitting to an hour a day means that I get my Old Phart card pulled. Anybody else dare to man up?????

Interesting topic. I was volunteering at our local museum today/ family day. One family came
through. Mom and dad and son were very interested and talked and asked good questions. The daughter about 12 never took her eyes off her phone.
My grand kids know when they come to the farm they only use their phones to call HOME. I only have one who doesn't like Grandpa Rules. He doesn't stay with us. I'm told i'm being mean.
My daughter used tell me I was old fashioned. Now that she has her own kids, she laughs and says my old fashion rules aren't so bad.
