Do you want a 3020 engine in your 3020? Or are you flexible? I am not sure but I am thinking I heard once that a 2520 or similar models engines would fit a 3020. Can anyone else comment?

Paul

Don't know if it will fit,but a 2520 engine will make an underpowered 3020. Kind of like the guy who put a 460 gas motor in a 756,and then wondered why his tractor was so "weak".LOL There was a guy here who put a 4230 engine in a 3020. He called it "Stretch".But,I put a 400 motor in an Md,so I don't have any room to talk1 LOL

Possibly better posted on the John Deere board where the real experts live, but I am pretty sure the answer is NO. The 3020 has proven itself to be a very popular all around tractor over the course of time, and as you probably know, the newest 3020 is now 47 years old. Unfortunately, the 3020 has an 'orphan' engine that was only used in the 3020 (unlike the 4020 which had the same engine used in combines and other things). I beleive the 2510 and 2520 also had engines that were used in other pieces of JD equipment.

Clutch housing would have to be changed to a Dubuque tractor style meaning 2510 or 2520. A 4030 clutch housing can be used depending on the switchover. It's also possible to make an adapter plate but that makes it look less factory. As far as underpowered that does not need to be as a 4-276 or even a 4-239 can be put in and turbo'd to boot. I've always wanted to redo a 3020 but doubt that I will due to money. Tim S could address all the details in doing a conversion.

I documented what needs to be done on this site to put a 300 series engine in a 3020, you can probably find them by looking at posts I started in my profile.

404's and 466's will bolt to a 3020,...All utility Deere engines will bolt to a 2520/2510 Deere uses 3 basic engine bolt patterns, the smaller utility, the small Waterlooo's and the large Waterloos...

A 2520 used a 219 and if the injection pump is tuned some it will run right beside or even out perform a factory 3020. The downfall of the 3020 was the balencer system. It took to much power and made the engine a little slow in throttle response. If I were doing it I would use a 239 or a 276. A friend has a late 3020 with a 239 turbo engine and it runs over 100hp on a dyno.I have three 3020 diesels(factory 270 engines) and a 2510 and a 2520 that both have the 219 engines. In field work there is very little difference other than the 2510-2520's are geared slower. Tom

lee little, you will have to search the Modern version of YTMag. That has a good search tool. Paul

MikeJM, I don't know if I found the correct posts. I found where you were putting a 239T into a 3020. Wow! I guess you and Tim S are in the same league. Lots of fabrication and nothing stops you. :)

I will have to see if I can find the rest of the pictures you said you would post at the bottom of those posts I found. This is very interesting to me.

lee little, unless I am miss reading the posts below you are out of luck unless you have some fabrication skills like Tim and MikeJM. The 404 and 466 are six cylinder engines so you have to lengthen your 3020. The engines MikeJM is talking about bolt up different so that requires another set of modifications.

One thought is I see a lot of 3020's on Craig's list. Then again, maybe you go to a tractor that has more engine sources.

Let us know your thoughts.

2510Paul and others thanks for all the comments/help. I am open to any swap that would be relatively simple. What would it take to put a 2510 engine in it? I might have a line on one of those. I am open to anything that is not too complicated. I put a 5.9 cummins in my 806 farmall. Anything like that or simplier I am up to. Thanks so much for your help guys, you are awesome !!!

If you can put a Cummins in an 806 then you can put a Dubuque engine in a 3020. If you go the clutch housing replacement route then the new housing has to match the 3020 housing. If an early 3020 then you have to use a 2510 housing. If a side console 3020 then you need a 2520 housing for the hydraulically activated PTO. Or you can go the adapter plate route. You most likely had to make an adapter plate for the Cummins to go in the 806.

I like equipment that lasts and I would rather put money into a good tractor and have something that will work and work well when I want it to and with a new engine and some other work you would have a machine that will last another 50 years 10 thousand dollars won?t go very far towards one of these new tinfoil and plastic orange or red or even green tractors and you?ll never buy another 70 horsepower tractor in this day and age you?ll end up with a 70 horsepower lawn mower at best

I'm talking older tractors from the 60's and 70's a lot of them in my area in good condition can be bought for less than $5K and you'd still have the one that needs the motor for
parts.

Traditional I bought a 3020 powershift for really cheap last fall it was supposed to have a bad engine but I wouldn?t be afraid of putting 6 or 7000 dollars into it because I will run it until the world ends

I need to restate that. A machine shop redrilled the 806 D plate. The funny thing is a gas plate has several holes that are close to where the holes need to be for the cummins. To use it you would have to weld the holes up then drill. Its easier/cheaper to start with a diesel plate.
