At work our boss said that the company has a top 20 list of people getting the most overtime and they want to cut that down. Today I asked him if I was on the list. He said Oh yes. I asked him if I was in the middle and he said no, you are #3. I told him I would have to try harder and he laughed at me. He said not to worry about it, because the plant manager knows what I do and am always busy so it's OK. I nearly doubled my wage last year. I'm gettin close to retirement and plan to soak them for all the OT I can this year trying to get bills paid off so I can retire. Boss said they are really gonna miss me when I'm gone. That made me feel good, but I'm still tired. Chris

It feels good to be recognized as one of the better employees, but I remind myself I could not show up as soon as tomorrow, and they would go on like I was never there.

A few years ago the owner said no overtime. Four weeks later my boss wanted to know why my customers were calling in mad, because I
was not stopping and checking in like I used to. When I pointed out that my ten hour route still had just as many miles, and I was
working 8. They fixed it by giving me 4 tens, and having someone on salary do the other day.

Every couple of years they tell us no overtime then the work falls behind and we make even more overtime duh. And it just happens to coincide with a new manager that has to learn the hard way

It sounds to me like you are the fabric of the company. They will miss you. I had half dozen that I had around me, when I owned the company I now still work at, and its hard to see them retire, but I never try to talk them out of it. I want them too, I want them to enjoy. And a job well done.

I don't personally want to retire,,, yet, but thinking,,, the Mrs. is thou, this year.

K effective, yes it does stroke the inner ego to be complimented on your work ethic. But you are absolutely correct, whether you die or retire, the work will continue, the company will go on. Oh, you'll be missed, and often times they will crack jokes about you or wonder how you are doing, but the beat goes on. No one is irreplaceable. gobble

When I was working in Las Vegas, I asked my brother to come out for a visit, and he said he was too valuable to take time off. I told him the cemetery was full of irreplaceable men. He was very unhappy to hear that. Oh well..

How valuable a guy really is ..... the story is the "hand in the bucket". When you are working, it's like you have your motionless hand in a calm bucket of water. When you remove it (like leaving a job), there is a momentary swirl and then the water is calm again. Nobody should ever flatter themselves as to how valuable they are. It's only in your own little world.

Before I retired, I was in management and earned comp time instead of overtime. After we had a 20% staff reduction, the city manager told my boss I was accumulating to much comp time and needed to cut back. I said no problem, just let me know whether he or the City Manager wanted the call in the middle of the night when all heck broke loose. Funny, he never got back to me.

Put in my voluntary overtime years long ago. Now a days I don't have a volunteer bone left in my body. They were running when I got there and will be when I'm gone (if stupid management doesn't kill them.). Boss keeps sweating my retirement but I tell him I'll let him know when I'm done and not before.

I always remember being told that if you think you are irreplaceable, remember that there are at least 20 other people out there who would like to have your job.

I agree Crazy Horse. One day on the news they stated how many thousands of hours of PAID vacation was left on the table by Americans each year. (Because they felt the company would fail if they were absent)

I worked a lot of overtime too, and put it all in my 401K, and then retired. 58 and out the gate!
